Are records in a 17-game season really the "record" ?

NFL is more than 100 years old. So there is more < 16 game history than =/>. Either we are about fairness and acknowledging history or we arent. It cant just be "the timr that I like matters". And rule and playstyle changes have a far bigger impact than season length. Either you accept it all or account for it all :manny:.
yea
thats why for instance AP > dikkerson
Dont care if dikkerson has ten more yards in his season - shyts irrelevant

It’s still a record, it just has to be taken into context.

OJ still has the record for rushing yards per game for 1973, and yards from scrimmage per game for 1975.

Even without longer seasons, there’s been rule changes which make it harder to compare records regarding passing.

Championships are barely counted prior to the merger though. Yes, some old folks wax poetic about the old Unitas tapes and 1958 but the NFL really became the modern NFL in the Super Bowl era.

I agree that rules changes have a bigger impact on records, I've been saying that for years. My issue comes when people make comparisons between 16-game seasons and 17-game seasons without discussing the added game.

And one day someone will say this about 16 games. You can't pick and choose what history is important and what can be dismissed.

Absolutely. The NFL is awful at collecting its history. The Eagles have 3 rings from the 1940's and 1960's for example. The Lions used to win A LOT 70 years ago. The Bears and Packers have won as much as some of the european soccer teams.

It's not about me growing up with 16 games, I acknowledged it was 14 and 12 previously. It's about people like the media (and some fans) pretending like there's no difference.

I was GLAD that Cooper Kupp didn't break the receiving record because people were acting like it made no difference between him playing 17 games and Calvin Johnson playing 16 games.

Johnson averaged 122.8 yards per game vs. Kupp's 114.5
Yea and that's the HUGE difference.. NOBODY says it. Nobody mentions it. Like there's a memorandum on not saying it a single time, before, during or after being broken, that it took an extra game to do it.

It's not the fact it's happening. It's the fact they acting like it's not happening
