Rum has a higher sugar content. Alcohol+sugar=hangover
i hear you its the worst....last time i was in New Orleans i was drinking a shyt load of sugary drinks like Hand Grenades and a few others until i was shytfaced. the next day i had to take a plane and the hangover with the booze and sugar was the worst ever
now ill stick to vodka and beer

my general rule is:
dark is for gentlemen (whiskey, brandy, cognac, etc.)
light and clear is for females/parties/mixed drinks (tequila, vodka, rum, etc.)
beer is for sad-saps.
im not a big drinker, but when i do, i drink the dark shyt.

too much cognacs get me struggle drunk. have me getting carried out with my toes dragging. the same amount or more of vodkas and light colored tequila and i can at least walk.

IDk, but i can drink waaayyy more Cognac and Vodka than whiskey, Tequila, and Rum.

Not true. Different alcohol will affect your behavior differently. Whiskey makes me violent. Vodka makes me mellow. Henn makes me a horny nikka. Beer makes me social. Trust me, different liquor affects you differently. Tequila makes me crazy, to the point ill do shyt and not care if ill die or get arrested. I've driven 120 miles/hour in a raging storm on a mountain road after downing a bottle of patron.
