EDIT: To the bolded.....If you were going by the law of PEMDAS (which I'm assuming you are) Addition comes before Subtraction and that would equal 2, but you are supposed to go from left to right and that would make it 4.

Nope, the order in which you add or subtract is dictated by how the equation is setup

3-4+1=0

and

3+4-1=6

same goes for multiplication and division

Just like 5-2+1= 4 not 2
