Roaches Don’t Fly joint has a sample start right around 0:50 that was the main sample of a beat Al had made over a decade ago that had appeared on a video with DJ Salam Wreck, B Real, Evidence, and Al in the studio with Al playing a handful of beats (still on YouTube, but now made private). The original beat hasn’t come out, but man, the beat on that original flip was schizophrenic.. Al has a war chest of killers in his catalogue that remain unreleased. I hope I live to see the day that all those beats drop..
Was it the video with these beats on it too? :mjcry: at it being private now. That was dope studio footage.

They aren't really for me, but I'm trying to be open minded to a style I'm not that familiar with.

So far I'm not really feeling it but I'm gonna give it another listen. Alchemist deserves that much - at least.

Sometimes you got to listen to stuff that's outside your wheel house. Otherwise I never would have discovered artists like Juvenile back in the day. And he is just one of hundreds of examples.

Been reading about Billy and Elucid this morning and a lot of heads really love these guys man. They aren't really my lane, but it seems like for the type of hip-hop they make, they have a lot of respect and admiration from fans and other rappers and producers.

:yeshrug:

Just curious, do you like Earl or DOOM at all? Or not really?
Earl nah not at all.... I fukked with that domo and alc tape a few years back heavy

nah didn’t fukk with doom at all ....I respect him heavy tho ....legend

Off a a skim I ain’t really feelin the rappers. Reminds me of an updated early 2000s weathermen / def jux / athletic mic league underground nerd tight jansport rap shyt. Hopefully Al puts out an instrumental version of this. Low key I think Mach would sound dope on most of these beats

Perfect description I got while listening. The actual sound is good, but as I was listening to the verses, I was basically looking like “:hhh:” the whole time. They are the lyric versions of El-P’s production for Run These Jewels

My whole thing with these dudes is I don't expect tight flows from them, its not what I'm here for. These dudes drop these lyrical nuggets and can create a vibe where you have no idea what they'll say next, which makes their style interesting IMO. Definitely get that it's not for everyone, and I'm far from an expert on this movement either. Someone else might explain the appeal better, but this type of hip-hop has grown on me as I get older for certain moods and settings
That’s about it for me. Billy’s references tend to be obscure, but he still often flips Jay-Z lines or here on Robert Moses, there’s the line about Jimmy and Cam getting ran out of The Rucker. There’s this balance with the more digestible nuggets, so it’s not completely impenetrable. Nothing hard to understand about “my third eye don’t believe me” or “negros shoot for the top, I always had poor posture” and finding humor in the pessimism gives them distinct voices as well. Not really the kind of music I’d bump in the car, but there’s a time and a place for it.

Los Scandalous
Big Def Jux vibes
there's direct relation to Jux. Billy Woods was/is cool with Vordul. Woods said in interviews that Vordul was an influence, And Mach fukk w/woods and has said woods was an influence.

I do wish being artistic and more conceptual was more of a thing in hip hop, but instead lil nikkas using auto tune w/basic bars while harmonizing is seen as "progressive"

No doubt.

but ironically I thought the production here actually sounded better in my car
