Because they were "Industry plants", they had no grass roots following or any credibility in hip hop culture. They were a safe "pro black" group that 90's white yuppies could safely listen to without feeling "attacked". The difference is today there are no gatekeepers and now those same "yuppies" who failed to prop up these "altenrative rap" acts to hip hop heads are now "hipsters" or whatever you want to call them today... they are the tastemakers and are dictating what's "hot" in rap, fashion, "urban culture", etc.
Yep. That was the reason why we crapped on Arrested Development in real time. It's a damn shame folks these days are trying to re-write history.

Their first two albums were dope.

And their Unplugged was dope too. In real time, I didn't think they were corny or wack, at all. I know a lot of rappers at the time didn't like how they got more coverage and sold millions of records. But they had a lot of dope songs.

I remember Rakim giving them props back then too. They were different, but in a good way. Just added more variety to an era where nobody had to be or sound the same.

Damn I remember him saying that shyt too

He said that on something else too. In an interview he called it slave rap. Now every time I hear Arrested Development I think of Ice T calling it slave rap :dead:

I hear what he’s saying but damn :skip:

Was one of my first albums I owned growing up :flabbynsick:

I put them in the same category as Digable Planets but Blowout Comb is actually a super slept on album. Made me respect them.

So I thought this was just going to be another deal where they interview someone while driving...I didn't expect a concert to break out.

So here is my Arrested Development story: I listened to the shyt out of them in high school, then forgot they existed. Then all of the sudden the women that's behind the driver there--Tasha LaRae--who I went to high school with was in the group. Which might not be so wild except I live in Omaha, not exactly a hot spot for people to join rap groups. But she had moved to Atlanta. So I got back into them. I like them. I like Ice-T but I don't know what he's talking about, Tennessee is about living in a land that enslaved and lynched your ancestors and trying to deal with that. Just my take.
