This kind of thread is very necessary if you consider yourself a supporter of Hip Hop music. I wanna add my two cents but I’d rather let Art do his thing and watch the pistol smoke.

I would like to add one thing tho…..My first introduction to Hip Hop was Beat Street in 1984……..But I wanna post the 1st Hip Hop song that I recall that had the attention of little kids and teens in the Bronx in 1985. ……It was one of those “You had to be there moments “ because I noticed as years have passed it doesn’t have the same popularity as it did in 85. This song had my older cousins going crazy when it came on the radio. The chorus in 1985 was as popular as “Aint worried about nothing” and “Versace Versace” is in 2013. It didn’t have the pop appeal of Whodini or UTFO’s “Roxanne Roxanne”…..Hip Hop was more like a cult movement in the 80’s and this song was one of its Mantras.

this song is not that rare, actually.
it is just overshadowed by the more legendary content rich records, that were voted some of the best records ever made.
plus, this record had the same syncopation that the fatboys, used a bit later.

also,...larry's dance spawned one of my favorite guilty pleasure's...larry larr's that's what they call me.

Larry Larr......Ha! Thats another "You had to be there"
moment. I think of that name and I think of Son Of Beserk and 2 Kings and a Cypher......

What I was saying about Larrys Theme was that in 85 that song was one of the biggest Hip Hop songs right next to Roxanne Roxanne and Pee Wee Herman and The Show....But as decades have passed that song didnt have the same shelf life as the other big hits from 85. The song turned into a "You had to be there to understand how big it was" song.

Also this mix as it has some historical context too and a lot of people probably haven't heard it...

This track was big back in the day......I dont understand why the views are so little....This was the fist song that introduced me to scratches....As a kid I thought the scratches was some toy robot dog barking. I remmber waiting for the dog to pop out when the video came out..... The video was bugged for its time.....Watching it now this video reminds me of Rockwells "Somebodys Watching Me"

Mars - Pump Up the Volume

This was a real big dance song in the 80's. I think its safe to say that this track was the song that put Rakims voice on a mainstream level. This song was everywhere even in commercials.....This song inspired a movie with the same name

for all the young cats,..
who are wondering why so many older breaks are on here first is.
I am trying to illustrate how little there was, originally.
plus, how diverse it was.
it was not easy as listener to get to hear the culture.
plus, if you were like me.
I was born and raised in Chicago
so, getting more meant trips to my fam in b-more, and learning how to pick the right records to buy.
plus, how much time could lapse between the next thing that dropped.
which early on,...it could have literally been a year.

especially in the oldschool way of thought.

hopefully, this culture is not taken for granted.
as real talk,...
not to many old cats were gonna pull you to the side and put you up on knowledge, music and culture.
hiphop was what supplied the gems and jewels.

so, respect that the culture is where it is in the public eye.
it could be gone, and real talk....
you have no idea what or how hard it is, when it is not on the radio.
or you have to stay up, till the wee hours in the morning at the end of the am and fm dial.
this culture is a godsend.......
a literal saving grace, that made this planet way better than it would have been.

I seen Shannon posted so its only right that right that behind that we put a spotlight on Lisa Lisa and Cult jam. Lisa Lisa was real big contributor to the 80’s Pop, dance, R&B and Hip Hop scene. Cult Jams production team included the 3 bullies in the first 2 House Party movies. They had a hand in creating Lisa Lisa. Till this day I still say the people behind Paula Abduls success in the late 80’s came from someone trying to make another Lisa Lisa being that Paula Abdul looked exactly like a smaller tit white version of Lisa Lisa.
Lisa Lisa had numerous hits…The following songs are a few centerpieces

Head to Toe

I wonder If I take You Home

Can You Feel The Beat

Lost In Emotion

All Cried Out
