if nikkaz, had the culture.
there would be no more sellouts.
as the labels would never be able to taint talent like this ever again.
losing kane to selling out was one of the darkest days in days of man, period.
shyt still fukkin' hurts,........
as a matter of fact,.....
kane and that whole guard of hopeful goats from that era.
all were grown men, and had every skill and then some imaginable.
as opposed to the bullshyt, we get nowadays.

nikkaz ain't know kane, krs and rakim were nineteen years old.

this is what you trying to be as a blackman, and as an debuting emcee, period.
if you not this quality,..
I probably won't fukk with you.

Krs was 25 on Sex & Violence

That's crazy for real.

Think about him being 26 and reenergizing his draw with Return Of The Boom Bap after the industry tried to shyt on him in 1992.

26, man. How old is J Cole again?

wanna take the time to talk about the popular mainstream novelty rap of the 80's. This was mainstreams way of acknowledging Hip Hop's presence in the form of mockery.

I wanna speak on a song that played heavy on Z 100. Z 100 for those who don't know is a top 40 station in NY and it was pretty much that in the 80's with a more rock friendly lean. From what I remember I dont recall any real Hip Hop songs on z 100 in the 80's but they did play these 2 songs.

Rapping Duke

Biggie was broke it down on that song "Juicy" when he spoke on the popular thought in the 80's that Hip Hop wouldn't go far.

Honeymoon rap by Eddie Murphy and Joe Pesci.

This was another popular song on z 100 yet on that same station neither Roxanne roxanne nor LL's "I need Love" ever got any play. I've said it before that "Nightmare on My Streert" was the first rap song I ever recorded and memorized. But in reality HoneyMoon Rap was the first rap song that I ever recorded on my tape player and memorized even tho it doesnt count as an official Hip Hop song. Mainstream radio wasn't ready to acknowledge Hip Hop in 85 NYC but it was ok to give the mockery songs some spins.

Rappin Rodney

This song pushed Rodney Dangerfields moniker of 'getting no respect' even further. The repeated chant of "no respect...No respect" was pretty popular when it came out.

Keep in mind in the 80's the biggest rappers were not on the level of popularity as the biggest rock and pop stars. neither Rakim or LL Cool J were any match to the likes of Jon Bon Jovi or Axl Rose in terms of mainstream popularity.

There was this one video show that came on channel 7 in NYC that was pretty popular. It was called Hot Trax hosted by Carlos. I dont know if this show was national but it was big in NY. I remember it would come on at 12 at night on Friday nights and the same show would re run that saturday afternoon. If i'm not mistaken it was an hour long. This was the show that would begin my music video addiction. This show had all the popular genres including pop, rock and R&B.....This was the show that introduced me to The Mary jane girls, Tina Turner, Wham, The Gap band, Culture Club, Bruce springstein, Atlantic Star, Debarge, New edition and pretty much everyone popular in pop music circa 83 - 85. The cool thing about this show was that they also played Hip Hop videos tho the Hip Hop was about maybe 10 to 15% of the shows format. The first time I ever saw the video for Rock Box by Run DMC was on this show. But in all honesty, I wasn't really into Hip Hop like that around this time....I was stuck on pop music....I was more into Boy George then Run DMC.

I youtubed Hot Tracks and Carlos and found a video with Fat Boys

The section of the bronx that my parents lived in didnt have access to cable TV. All you could get in my area was HBO. MTV and Nickleodean had commercial spots on basic TV that really made you wanna know what those channles were about. I didnt get access to cable until 1989. I felt so behind yet looking back I really wasn't. After Hot Tracks there was another show on UHF that focused primarily on Hip Hop music. the show was called Video Music Box and it came on in the mid day after school. I saw a thread recently on the coli which celebrated VMB's 30 years of being on the air. A lot of good feedback was in that thread so I wong get to deep into wwhat that show was all about but it was that show that really introduced me to Hip Hop. This was around late 1987/early 1988 for me when my brother was 1 years old and Kool Moe Dee had "Wild Wild West"

On another note: 2 shows that I remember as a kid that had Hip Hop themes aimed at children in the late 80's was The Dj kat Show and Street Frogs. This was another form of mainstream acknowledging Hip Hops presence.
