I was just listening to "One on 1" by DJ Quik.

And thinking to myself how this would've been a more successful single to put out than "Trouble", which was dope but not really single material.

What other artists have shot themselves in the foot like this?

are you serious? If Quik put out "One On 1" as a single they woulda had to edit every other line. LOL

and "Trouble" was a great single...the single should be some chit that you are familiar with from that artist
to build anticipation for the new project.
"Trouble" did that - it was quintessential Quik: smooth guitar riff, thumpin' bass line, cocky rhymes, and
somebody from the Konnectid fam on the side.

The only cut off Under The Influence I think might've been a better single is "Get Loaded", but that would've
needed a lot of editing also.

that album had plenty of singles they would just have to re-recorded or edited heavily because of all the drug/sex references but then again what do you expect with an album of that title

one on 1 is a bad choice btw

To me "Trouble" is one of the best Quik tracks ever. It's fresh and very different, so in that regard it's a good single. But I remember around that time the Rap + R&B shyt was really poppin, so I think "One on 1" would've done better. True, they would've had to edit the fukk out of it.

"Sex Crymee" is another one that could've been a hit.

A couple that had me puzzled during the G-Unit days:

Tony Yayo releasing "Curious" instead of "Pimpin'".

No one and I mean no one was going to be interested in a song strictly for the ladies from Tony Yayo so why did they do it? It could've worked for Banks because the girls like Banks, but Yayo?! :pachaha:

Also, 50 Cent releasing "Best Friend" instead of "I'll Whip Your Head Boy" from the GRODT Soundtrack. That just made the "he's doing the same thing he was dissing Ja Rule for" stigma to the forefront. I know Best Friend charted in the Hot 100, but I think that single was so damn soft that it hurt 50 in the long run.

Artists gotta let the people pick the singles ... It's happening more now. Smartest, easiest way to do it.

I used to feel this way, but:

1. In a way, they kinda do. I say that to mean, a lot of times the artists put out the first single,
and then (if they even do a second), they listen to fan input for the other singles.

2. ...I don't like it. The first time I remember any artist actually doing this is when Blackstreet
put out Finally and had fans vote on the internet for the singles. They dropped that Janet/Ja/Eve
doo doo brick, then "Think About You" and "Take Me There (Remix)" with soundtrack clips. Yuck.
"I Got What You On", "Black & White" and "Hustler's Prayer" would've been some MONSTER hits.
Ah well.

Nah man.... Let the people pick... Not a "vote" either.... See that's why the mixtapes were important... You'd have a song bubbling that people ROCK with, and you could package that and make it your "single" it happened organic... You didn't force it on people to take it or leave it. A lot of time that single that they didn't like gets left off the album all together.

I hate when artists have songs out that people fukk with and then they'll go left like "here's my single, "money, money"(ex.)" foolish.... "Money , money" flops and then you force feed another one.. And another one.... Then you got 3 songs you gotta scrap. Waste of your marketing budget.
