Anyways @stomchlines to answer your question in the OP, I think at this point in 40's career as a Producer, 40 is like Diddy & Dr. Dre where they work with other producers who do a lot of the work and 40 mixes & puts the sound together for Drake. 40 was much bigger driving factor in Drake's sound earlier in Drake's career.

He's a good engineer,so far gone was recorded on a cheap mbox. Drake also has a super clear rap voice so I'm sure that helps. His beats aren't mind blowing and he needs a good rapper to bring them to life that's why he mostly works with Drake.

I dig a lot of his filtered bass moody sounding joints. I'm just not a big Drake fan, but production wise I think 40 is probably a little underrated, but definitely not top 25 or even top 50 to me.
