It's not what he lacks, it's how he presents himself. I used to think he was the future back in his mixtape days. shyt I still bump 100 miles and Running. But when he signed to MMG he lost that hunger and started spouting pseudo intellectual "poetry". It's like he tries too hard now.
EXACTLY this. Mixtape About Nothing is still his best work

I posted this in the Big Sean thread and was wondering why Sean/Wale are seemingly WAY behind Drake/Kendrick/Cole at least in terms of sales. They all have put out good projects at this point and all have major co-signs. I don't think it has to do with rhyming at all since both can spit and realistically this generation doesn't give 2 shyts about lyrics.

I think it's because Wale (and Sean also) don't have a signature sound. He rapped over those uptempo GoGo beats on the come up, he rocked over those MMG trap beats on Ambition, and his singles have hit with those RnB joints. The first half of The Gifted was pretty cohesive, but then the second half goes back into the mix-mash of rocking over different styles.

When people listen to Drake/Kendrick/Cole, they get a soundtrack:

Drake - OVO Sound
Kendrick - Modern West Coast
J. Cole - Stripped down self production

When people listen to a Wale/Sean album they still get that "early 2000 marketing package" where there's always

- 1 Big Feature
- 1 Obvious Radio friendly track
- 2 RnB features that could be radio singles
- 2 Hard/Trap songs

and then the rest of the album is what they actually wanted to put out. Wale/Sean need to get out of that mode and find a signature sound or do an EP with one or two producers and realize people nowadays don't buy albums off singles/features, but they want a whole vibe/soundtrack for their life.
Great post

I think More About Nothing is better, but Mixtape About Nothing def made me a fan of dude.

And I still think The Gifted is a damn good album

Dude really needs to thank MMG for saving his career though.

Attention Deficit was one of the most disappointing debuts I've heard in a while.

He would of been Joe Budden status in terms of commercial success if he didn't sign with Ross

Mic presence, delivery and flow IMO

I agree with flow and mic presence. At times his flow is :blessed: and then other times its :usure:. Like he takes breaks or something. And the main thing is his consistency because he likes to use styles and sounds that can be all over the place. So sometimes his projects come out like a delicious jambalaya and other times its throw up. But I do respect the fact that he is one of the few "newer" artists that still takes risks.

But I do think he is very talented and overall has put out quality music. He should also rap on more go go beats cause he sounds dope on that production.

:patrice: That's not true, not many are seeing him lyrically...

Ya'll may not agree but he just doesn't have a marketable look and he doesn't dress like a weirdo. He can rap and he can make a songs but he doesn't look enough like a fukk boy to cater to white consumers.

I think this set him apart and is probably why I like him more. An actual rapper who looks like a man and doesn't pretend to be some super aggressive thug.

Ok. But he hasn't still done anything to maintain his hype after those songs. He can give you a good joint or two but the mainstream fans keep ignoring him. Wale don't have that "it" factor to have people to keep checking up on him.
