As midterms approach, do you think Obama should get more involved? Or should he keep a low profile?

Ever since Trump took office, Obama has generally been low key and quiet and hasn't gotten too involved in politics, and almost never addressed Trump or his bullshyt.

Personally I feel it's for the best, if I was him I would just ignore Trump too (there's literally no benefit to addressing Trump and would just give Trump another way to deflect), and he deserved to take a break after the way he was treated as president. But that said, we're less than half a year from midterms.


So as we get closer, do you think Obama and Michelle should get out and start campaigning for Dem candidates and trying to get people out to vote? Or would you prefer they continue keep a low profile?


On one hand Obama is very charismatic and has a background as a community organizer, and I could definitely see that helping the Dems. And maybe he can get some of his supporters to actually show up to vtoe this year. On the other hand, having Obama in the spotlight again would likely mobilize Trump's racist base and give Trump someone to tweet about and deflect blame to.

Thoughts? At the moment I'm still thinking it would be a net benefit.

i'm torn.

part of me thinks that Obama should just focus on social issues and follow in the footsteps of Carter.
another part of me wants me to see Obama break character and just drop some ether.

Obama knows things.
i respect how he moves.

he has no political power but is attacked by the current president.
it it uncouth for a former president to criticize a sitting president.

should Obama break with the unwritten tradition and criticize the current president?
take into account that trump is running through unwritten traditions that have kept our democracy alive, albeit tentative.

it's a fukked up position to be in.

if you disregard the norms to take down someone who is disregarding the norms then who really wins?

this is a fight to maintain an imperfect societal structure that is striving to be better.


that being said, i'm pretty sure that Obama is staying in his lane and putting on his goat poker face.

I would like for him to be more involved but I’m glad he has spoken out on a few things ( gun violence, the Iran deal, etc).

There were two articles on The Root/Splinter recently about this same topic. I agree that him returning to the spotlight would be a rallying point for idiot conservatives, but I do think it would help a lot. He doesn’t owe us though.

I think Hillary should go away . Completely . Obama should only come out towards the last days . Even then he should fall back . If a democrat or a independent makes it far enough to become president he should be out here Bill Clinton style .

he should not get involved until 2020 because the republicans is most likely going to keep the senate and possibly the house in the midterms

What exactly do you want obama to do though? He was front and center at the last election and lost and also couldn't keep the house or senate democratic throughout his years. Its time to move on, this faux saviors complex of obama isnt going to prevent trump from winning 2020 without a strong dem or 3rd party candidate
