Cris Carter absolutely deserves his place in the Hall of Fame: his catching skills were legendary, route running precise, and 16 years of consistency.
But Asante Samuel isn’t entirely wrong to say Carter was overrated in certain respects.
Carter was a possession receiver, not a game-changing deep threat/physical mismatch. He racked up impressive stats through longevity and volume, not dominance or fear factor. He didn’t take over games or strike terror in defenders like Randy Moss, Terrell Owens, or even someone like Chad Johnson at his peak. And while Carter was reliable, his playoff resume lacks signature moments, and he never carried a team deep into January. His greatness came from precision and dependability, not explosiveness.

At the time this was a common complaint. He was let go in Philly for "only catching TD's" and a substance abuse problem. That turned into a terrible decision. He was good/great but fed off Moss stretching the field. IMO you still need those types of receivers, who run excellent routes and are where they are suppose to be when they're suppose to be/
