He got scammed.

Wrong, I’ve bought my last 2 vehicles off Craigslist. 4 years ago and no issues.

Just always make sure its a private seller and not some car flipper who flips cars from auctions

Its funny. Had he called his insurance company they would have ran the VIN as a courtesy before quoting him a price on the insurance and it would have saved him time and thousands of dollars.

It was the fake title that convinced him.....but here is my question...

What info was given to the guy during the original rental transaction??

I would have e had his photo taken with my ohone...obviously ID and something else to track him down

The more I think on it this story is mad suspect. I'd be looking at the owner as a culprit as well.
