The whole higher education argument needs to be reconsidered. Like anything else, most of what is pushed on kids and parents is all marketing.
It used to be that young adults would learn by doing apprenticeships and come out knowing an actual skill. Now all they push is book knowledge without any application. That is a recipe for disaster as there are only so many desk jobs to go around (especially well paying). The other problem with desk jobs is you're easily replaceable as just about anyone can come in and do the same thing as you.
The Students that went to Booker T Washington's Tuskegee came out with book knowledge and applied skill from working with their hands. In his book, "Up From Slavery", he talks about how his students were more humble despite their talents compared to the students from a eastern black college. He is talking about the sense of entitlement which is running rampant today. Getting your hands dirty forces you to humble yourself. So yea you might of graduated with a 4.0, but what can you actually do? What can you do to add to a companies bottom line?
The cost of education is out of hand. If your parents can afford to send you to whatever school then by all means go for it. However, I think there should be some alternative for students who come from lower income backgrounds and don't have support at home. This includes the ability to attend prestigious schools. By sending them to a diploma mill college and loading them with debt, you are essentially making them slaves. Not to take anything away from students that do well, but many of them are blind to see the advantage that was given to them by having both parents and money. They didn't have anything to do with being born into that family just like the poor kid didn't have anything to do with being born into that one. Life will never be fair, but there should be other avenues for kids in these situations.
