not better, just bigger. I remember everyone hitching their wagon to the DMX locomotive...dude was unstoppable at one point

even had people checking for Drag-on just to hear an X verse

I know plenty of people, as several others have alluded to in this thread who felt like X was better. I’m not arguing popularity. In his moment, X was being hailed as the best. I’m talking between 98-00.

According to you, you didn’t discover hip hop until 2003.. I’m not trying to disrespect you but you’ve subtracted yourself from this conversation based off when you claimed to discover hip hop....

By 2003 it was undeniable who was better in my humble opinion.

@mobbinfms

you whiteboys gotta stop @ me with your ducktales. It's beyond delusional at this point.

And if caccinfms is still @ me daily even though I put his weirdo ass on ignore 3 years ago, then you need to be a friend and get him some help :mjlol:

Real talk, the leadership here knows I’m black. I’ve dropped pics as proof, not sure why you’re racializing this but I only brought up my point because it’s your words.

I don’t know you brother and I honestly have nothing but respect for you but you’re not qualified to discuss this based on your own words.

Obv jay has eclipsed x cuz of consistancy but x had the higher peak.

I know vol 2 sold like crazy but i remember seeing that tour with jayz headlining thinking

“One song really got this dude headlining a tour over dmx, method man and redman?”

He was the low man on that tour but because they put it together they got the perception of being bigger but i was buggin saying how jayz headline a tour over dmx n method man...

Anyway... its dark n hell is hot to me is better than ANY jay album but obv jay got like 5 albums better than the rest of xs catalog.

And then there was x was a HUGE dissapointment to me

Jay was headlining a tour because he also had Vol. 1 and Reasonable Doubt. He had more material to perform. While neither was a huge success commercially, he had hits.

Incorrect. There is a reason it was called the Hardknock Life Tour. The single pushed Jay into the mainstream. Catapulted him.

DMX/The Ruff Ryder movement was arguably bigger at the time. Remember they went onto another huge tour in 00??

Cash money and Ruff Ryders

Of course that's why it was called the HKL tour. I was talking about why Jay was the headliner. HKL was his biggest single at that point, but Jay had other hists throughout '98. Also, Jay was the guy seen as the heir to Biggie. 1998 was the year that Jay really made that case from a mainstream standpoint especially going from Streets Is Watching to "Money Ain't A Thang" to "Can I Get A..." and then HKL.

Eh. X had 2 number 1 albums going into 99... i just dont get how jay was seen as the headliner because 98 was dmxs year even tho jay ended up trabslating that buzz into a lifelong career.

Aint no nikka, money aint a thang and hard knock life? Only had one real solo hit (which for the life of me i dont understand why it was so popular... annie sample made it). RD was BARELY poppin like that and vol 1 is a known lukewarm flop. Most of vol 2 popped off late i to 98 into 99.

Dmx had more hits. Meth def had more hits.

Jay to me was never THE guy until like blueprint but he always knew how to position himself so he seemed bigger than he was which is why he still on top today. It was a rocafella tour which is why dame was spazzin in dvd which makes sense why he the headliner but imo dmx def deserved a co headline spot atleast.

Vol. 1 is actually the best out of those 3 Vol. albums. It's an fantastic album.
Vol. 2 is maybe more real hiphop but i really don't give a fukk about things like that anymore although i somewhat still try to make real hiphop. I think Vol. 1 has really good music.

And those aren't my words, moron. Never were. Y'all say the strangest shyt for attention :wtf:

Nah Jay had more hits than what you're listing:

Ain't No
Dead Presidents 2
Who You Wit II
City Is Mine
Money Ain't A Thang
Can I Get A...
Hard Knock Life

There's also popular album cuts he could've thrown in there.

Just because you have a hot year, you don't get to headline a show. What's X's setlist given he only had IDAHIH and FOMFBOMB was still fresh.

Don’t know if you were around at the time, but it definitely wasn’t because of one song. Vol. 2 was filled with hits such as Hard Knock Life, Can I Get A, nikka What nikka Who, Money Cash Hoes, and Money Ain’t A Thing.

The album had sold 4 million copies before the tour, and would go to sell 5 million after. Add that with the success of his first two albums, and Streets Is Watching, I don’t see how he wasn’t deserving.

real talk... Vol 2 remains my all-time favorite Jay-Z album. It's not a classic album but the singles are just monstrous. I'm listening to Money Cash Hoes right now. shyt has to be a top 10 Jay-Z song. That beat is fukkin insane.

jay headlined because rocafella put the tour together.
if it was a def jam tour, DMX would headline or at least co-headline.

I agree that jay didn't do this off of just one hit tho.

nah
darn near every song on volume 2 was a hit. and jay was way ahead of method man & redman. they were the expendables on that tour.
but yea, DMX was the real headliner.

between X & jay, my top 5 albums between them are:
1. reasonable doubt
2. its dark & hell is hot
3. volume 2 hard knock life
4. flesh of my flesh, blood of my blood
5. blueprint or black album
