And again, b/c of the market for starting QBs you were going to HAVE to pay Matt Ryan 100 million dollars. Either you do it or you let him walk, which at the time wouldn't have made sense b/c you had just made the NFC Championship game. For all the criticism of Matt (a lot of it is valid) his contract is not what has doomed the Falcons especially when you see that his contract was structured into more guaranteed money up front so that his contract is more flexible on a year by year basis. You can still build a good team around a high paid QB (ask Dallas, or Green Bay or Denver or NE). Falcons have to build a team not just a QB/WR passing attack

Rebuilding with the QB in place is a lot better position to be in than what the Bills and Jets are working with. Baltimore manages to be competitive every year while paying Flacco. It's about coaching, discipline and the draft.

Dawg, you shouldn't have to waste your finger strength or breath on this argument. Falcons fans and non-Falcons fans who think his contract is the issue will never get it

I still have to give a detailed, rational explanation for the Hawks re-signing Joe Johnson in 2010. Some folks just don't understand...

Exactly! Great analogy...I've had to school people on the Joe Johnson situation too. At the time based on how the CBA was structured & the amount of money teams could offer max money to retain their own FAs it made sense. People forget that was the same summer of The Decision & that top FAs weren't trying to come here (especially since we didn't have money to go after OTHER team's free agents). If the Hawks had let Joe walk you lose your All Star captain at SG for nothing with limited funds under the cap to try and find a starting caliber SG. Wouldn't have worked

" If the Hawks had let Joe walk you lose your All Star captain at SG" key words

Joe Flacco got the contract cause he is swimming in playoff wins and won a super bowl. What has Matt Ryan done out side things accomplished in " Falcons franchise history" ?

The Falcons over valued the guy shouldn't have been paid the money and look now the Falcons are pretty much in rebuilding mode again in his 7th season. Now there is going to be a new head coach with a new OC; so there is a possibility that he will even get better. Like Smith since 2011 At this point with Matt Ryan the Falcons ( like usual) are just wasting the fans time. Hopefully Cardale Jones from Ohio st continues to improve and when the Matt Ryan experiment is coming close to ending the Falcons draft him.

I'm not saying he's the 2nd coming of a multi SB winning QB, but just who could we have gotten?! Franchise QBs don't just grow on trees, only a quarter of the league has QBs that have won a super bowl, and we can count a couple that did mostly because of defense/ST/run attack. Sure he's only won one playoff game and hasn't gotten us to the SB, but he's done pretty damn good. After 2016 I'll be on the :camby:Matt Ryan train, but as of now, nah. He's not the biggest issue

Since Ryan has been here he's been Offensive ROY, 2 time pro bowler & yes he's the best QB in Falcons history. With Matt's contract coming up goin into the 2013 season, you're idea is that the Falcons should've let him walk? Negotiations are what they are but he was going to get over a $100 million contract. The other option is to use the franchise tag on him for 2 consecutive years (which actually would take up more money under the cap than the long term deal he signed)

Here's where your anti Matt Ryan bias shows. First off, this is the first full blown rebuild Matt has endured since he got drafted so saying were in rebuilding mode again shouldn't include Matt in that discussion. But for me it always goes back to one thing: If you're the GM what do you do when it's time to make a decision about Matt's contract. Because at the time (summer 2013) we had just gone to the NFCCG & Matt had just won his first playoff game. Are you going to:

A. Let him walk as a FA after the 2014 season
B. Use the franchise tag on him for 2 consecutive seasons (which would've eaten up more of the cap and STILL would've been an avg of the top 5 QB contracts at that time)
C. Pay him market value for his position

You also have to consider your fanbase and season ticket holders and how they would react as well. You can't make these type of decisions in a one sided, fan boy vacuum

And Matt ryan didn't have good running attack from 2008 till 2012?? Yea mike Turner slowed down in 12 but he still rushed for around 800 something yards. Again I'm not saying we shouldn't have drafted him I'm not saying He IS the problem. I'm saying he didn't deserve the money the organization over valued him like Sam Baker. And We'll have to agree to disagree on the " he's done a good job" remark. I supported Matt a long time ago, like I've said in other posts once this team drafted Julio there were no more excuses for anyone involved with this team. Now we are possibly starting over. Everyone involved with this organization is THE problem

Who would you rather have that's on the market or has been on the market?
