It’s a lot to do with the way we consume music. Down south we listen to music the most in cars because everything is spread out and we don’t rely on public transpo. Plus strip club culture is bigger down here so the music reflects that. Also it’s the Bible Belt so church music or gospel is big, which in that is lot of chanting and repeating words over and over, ala down south rap.
Now up north guys were walking, on subways, buses consuming the music so they are more susceptible to lyrics because you can pay more attention to what artists were saying.

folks make the distinction between the greats from the south that actually gave food for thought in their work & the breed of artist that came to dominate

& even then who are the most celebrated & embraced of the southern artists¿

I think a lot of the disconnect between nyc and the south is is due to the differences between East Coast and southern neighborhoods and street cultures .
BLUF: in the East Coast and West Coast, rapping prominently became an extension of street and neighborhood rivalries which creates a atmosphere of competition for rappers/lyricists.
The south for sure has neighborhood and street rivalries but they have a different relationship with music. in the south music is more prominently seen as a form of leisure, less as a subculture. This isnt exclusive to black folks either, look at how punk, metal, and grunge were created on the coasts of the united states.
