The South has been the center of the rap universe for 20 years. Why do they care what New York thinks? It's not 1995 anymore.
The last 20 years has been about Kendrick, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Kanye.

Great perspective. It’s a lot to do with the way we consume music. Down south we listen to music the most in cars because everything is spread out and we don’t rely on public transpo. Plus strip club culture is bigger down here so the music reflects that. Also it’s the Bible Belt so church music or gospel is big, which in that is lot of chanting and repeating words over and over, ala down south rap.
Now up north guys were walking, on subways, buses consuming the music so they are more susceptible to lyrics because you can pay more attention to what artists were saying.
And then everyone else has been from the South. Atlanta, specifically. The music has been centered there since 2004.The last 20 years has been about Kendrick, Drake, Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, Kanye.

folks make the distinction between the greats from the south that actually gave food for thought in their work & the breed of artist that came to dominateIce T made cocaine rap popular, not the south(shouts out to Shooly D and Just-Ice)... when the south hit the mainstream, we was trying to give the world wisdom.... before then, we was booty shaking and making party music on a regional level
the sentiment of anti.intellectualism was pushed strongest from the south
