This worked for me. Keeping it at 8 or below kb let me change it. I used this site to do it Image Resizer | Easily Resize Images Online for FREEJust tried it out since the QR code I had now redirects somewhere else
It looks like it doesn't accept files above a certain file size (possibly 9KB? A file at 8.94KB was rejected but ones at slightly over 8KB were fine.)
It accepts .gifs but makes them static, though they work correctly on the avatar page and when viewed in Imagus.

It still seems like file size is the primary factor. You could try cropping the image to (roughly) square before resizing/compressing just so there is less 'unnecessary' information in the image. The page linked to earlier in the thread actually has a compression feature here, but you might need to resize and compress (I tried using ye olde Fireworks to do any cropping, resizing and compressing)
As an example of cropping before compressing: 4.44KB @ 85% quality (the file size ballooned after cropping in ImageGlass for some reason)@mods can I change my avi to this please?
