She must have a very asian or wack name to be calling herself awkwafina unless it’s just part of the whole blaccent thing.

I think a terrible rap song of hers went viral under than name. I think it was her ticket to the next steps and she just kept going by the rap name

:unimpressed:

She shoulda just said " Fukk outta hea! I'm from Queens! Southside in this bytch!!"
That's all she would've had to say if it was genuine.

Shame. The Farewell is legitimately a good movie but this might be the end of her chapter :yeshrug:

we should act like them...when ask why... she do it...

it’s right there for anyone to do it.

the problem with America is that black people (from childhood) are taught that we get punished 2-3 times as harsh for doing the same thing as others.

Imagine a black dude calling himself “Rorrerskate” (roller skate) and talking in an Asian accent. He’d never get support, he’d get ridiculed IF he ever broke through.

but people of all other races get to break through and then apologize millions of dollars and fame later. :francis:

why do we accept that her way of speaking is black? I don’t speak like that. We shouldn’t accept these stereotypes.

it’s an interesting take
I know where you’re coming from…I don’t speak that way either.

But whether or not you or me reject it, we all know what the parody is. It’s an ignorant parody, but just because we defy it doesn’t mean that we don’t know what it is.

I could say “hey what’s up ese” and squint my eyes and posture a certain way, and you’d know I was parodying a Mexican. You wouldn’t think I was pretending to be Asian, or European.

It’s ignorant, non-representative of all people, but racial stereotyping isn’t something you can just “reject” simply because they don’t fit you. The tropes are pretty engrained.
