I don't care what anyone says, I still like to go into stores and look around. that all digital future we heading towards won't be all its cracked up to be imo

People really don't know how to interact with each other anymore. Used to love hanging out in bookstores but don't forget public libraries exist

B&N was definitely a spot i could spend hours in, used to rotate between there, starbucks and the library when studying for my GMAT. But I can't complain cuz i haven't shopped in a B&N in 6 years maybe. The few times i'm not copping a kindle version of a book is when i'm in an airport and buy something on the fly, otherwise I go to independent bookstores (there's a black owned one not too far from me) that I feel need that support more than big corporations.

i know every generation goes through these things but it is just staggering the ways in which so many industries have been altered/destroyed in the last 20 years.
It's really sad and we are doing it to ourselves.
Laziness combined with Social Networking means we don't have to go outside unless it's to go to work.
What happens when online sales plummet because nobody has jobs at retail stores that provided income to them. There's not enough "high skill" jobs for everybody. There has to be "low skill" tier in order for a society to not collapse.

How many people actually have career jobs that you can retire from. A very low percentage I would imagine. The poor will grow poorer.

kindle is the one dedicated electronic that i don't mind being one dimensional, 1000's of books on a 1/2 lb device with a paper like readability :ohlawd:

Universal Basic Income is the answer.

McKinsey study suggests automation may wipe out 1/3 of US workforce by 2030

to be honest i don't know that these companies could've done anything. amazon kills it in the book business bc you can go there and buy a used book for basically the price of shipping. amazon would sell books even if it was losing money on it because it brings people to their site.

how do you compete with a company that's willing to lose money on the items upon which you base your business?
Let the coli capitalist tell it their are no excuses adapt or die

It's still the best product Amazon ever created. Last year, I finally upgraded from my old keyboard to a paperwhite and it's phenomenal :wow:

Yeah the great depression never happened

That is something totally different... What you’re seeing today is the phasing out of industries due to technology resulting in job displacement.

The Great Depression was an economic crash due to the stock market plummeting and causing 10000 banks to close.

The former is a societal shift... the Industrial Age finally transforming into the digital age

the latter is a complete economic meltdown where the equivalent today would be 40 to 50 million people unemployed... with no social programs to help subsidize the cost of living

but fear not... we’ll have our own version of the depression soon enough
