Prime for prime its close, but overall I'm taking Ras. Kurupt got too many "caterpillar ass, salamander ass" bars.

What always threw me off was the stark contrast from 1994-1997 Ras Kass to Rassassination and beyond. He was still very good, but he was never the same after that SOI era. I feel like that album flopping ruined him.

All the singles and guest appearances during that SOI and prior era were next level lyricism I never heard before. But after the album didn't do great and wasn't highly rated either in the publications, he never had that hunger or that supreme level of wordplay he displayed before.

honestly I think folks who were trying to find "lyrical miracle" west coast artists had pigeonholed him and Chino (and heiro).

But you're 100% right about Ras Kass. Probably played a big role in it.

LOL yeah a lot of people think he's from the West because he moved out there by his second album. And he had a close connection with Sway and Tech once he got out there.

But yeah he was born in the Bronx and grew up and was raised in East Orange NJ. That female rapper Lady London is his niece.

Truth.

He was never the same again after Rassassination. Even on that album, he kinda scaled back on the lyricism. I think the pressure of being more accessible and commercial got the better of him. A lot of elite MC's started dumbing down their sh*t to get more people to listen around '97-'98. Thing with Ras though, he never got back to doing what he did best. To this day, that frustrates me.

I thought everyone who actually knew who Chino XL was knew he was from Jersey lol
