As others have mentioned yes you need to watch season 1 before. It's a BBC show so there are only 8 episodes so it shouldn't take that long to go through.

Season 2 is better than season 1 but season 1 is excellent

British series often favor slower, tightly plotted, character-driven mysteries with shorter seasons (usually 6–8 episodes). As well BBC is publicly funded, so it can take creative risks and make shows that prioritize depth over ratings.
