Breh i'm with you but did you not read the part that said he had been offered promotion but was happy where he's at. Some people just get comfortable and do not have the mental strength to get out of it. Maybe he has a mental illness? There's something spooky about working around or even being waited on as a customer by this type, especially when they're nearly old enough to be your father. It's like watching Cecil in "The Butler", or a male version of Georgian in "Get Out", without the tears, while they really believe they're comfortable...might even snitch on you.
