It’s hard not to notice the social gulf between customers and staff in a place like Walker Bros. Not that any of this is unique, of course. The optics are just a bit more evident: The staff is black and Latino, wearing old timey diner hats, serving comfort food to mostly white, affluent, well-educated North Shore families, the dining rooms wrapped in polished wood and stained glass more common a half century ago. That said, it’s also not uncommon to see customers giving bear hugs to beloved bussers and servers. It’s a warm community hub, a fixture of the local culture

:scust:
Having been to this location a bunch of times, its absolutely true. And lines be wrapped about the building on both entrances often, especially on holidays. I was served by a Brotha named Gideon the last time I was there. Its really old school and the staff is black and latino.

Wilmette cats have BREAD. Some of the streets are paved with bricks, not cement. Its a really bad look when you get down to it. However, brothas need jobs so:yeshrug:Not for fukking decades, however.

Everyone who can’t believe this guy was content with this lifestyle would be mind blown if they actually got off their computers and traveled the world. Believe it or not there are people happier than you with less. But on another note those comments by his grandson are low key :mjpls:

mmaaannnn, too many books out there to read. Too much info out there to not learn skills to make you decent bread. 10 bucks on Udemy. I think a lot of people just lack exposure.
Nah Breh. Some people don’t have the desire. We are living in an age where knowledge is cheap. The info we have available at our fingertips is truly astonishing. Anyone in America who is ignorant is willfully so.

Asked why, after so many years, he never asked management for a less demanding job, why he stayed at the same pancake house so long, Loggan doesn’t register the question, as if those questions hadn’t been there in a long time. Ray Walker said he’s asked Loggan about advancing but “Loggan doesn’t want anything else — he’s said he’s fine where he is.” He said, “I think he views this as a place where he knows people, he’s safe and comfortable.” He said Loggan “was the complete opposite of a Black Panther kind of guy,” never an advocate or rabble rouser. He said that limited schooling “probably helped smooth out his world — I would doubt Loggan really ever dreamed about buying a Cadillac.”

:mjpls:

Yeah that stood out to me too.

“He could retire now,” said Javon Chambers, his grandson, himself a Walker Bros. busser for 15 years

If this was a white dude, do yall think that this would be a story in such a major publication?

Yes, but it would be flipped.

There would be outrage that a hard working white man has worked for a company for 54 years and they had not drastically increased his pay. There would be fire and brimstone laid at the companies doorstep, fukking riots and boycotts and the elderly white man would have a $5million dollar GoFundMe by the end of the fukking week so he could retire while the company apologized profusely for mistreating such a good white man and promises to change things going forward, because every (white) man woman and child deserves the american dream as long as they work hard for it.

But its one of us... So they make it look admirable to slave your whole life away for pennies and smile for it. fukk these p*ssy ass demons man, the only reason I hope there's an afterlife is so all cacs can burn eternal.

:dahell:I've seen him there before. I used to go all the damn time. No idea he was there that long. Shout out to Original Pancake House on Green Bay Rd.:ahh:

:mjlol:

I’ve seen him there too. My grandparents live in Wilmette. Eat there all the time. There and Sarkis Grill.

It’s weird though he was only making $14. Trying to fill service sector jobs in the North Shore is pretty hard because the towns are so expensive, they can’t sustain lower income residence. So you see a lot of black folks from Rogers Park or Latinos from Highwood or Waukegan coming in to fill those jobs. They even have a hard time filling regular firefighter and police officer positions. Those dudes are coming from five or six suburbs over.

Live in Gurnee traveling all the way to Winnetka to be a police officer.:mjlol:
