ATL, but rasied in DMV
I was just thinking about his son saying that he knew people who retire, often get bored and die. I already said that was a poor choice of words, and not true, although it does happen here and there. I recall working as a guard, were mostly everybody was older than me, especially when I first started. We had to remain on our feet all day, with only thirty minutes for lunch, and 2 fifteen minute breaks. Out of a guard force of over 350, I remember seeing only a handful retire, and die not long afterwards, and those cases were emphasized. But unlike this article is trying to say, this did not happen all the time, and it didn't make my older co-workers scared to retire by a long shot. They still got out of there as soon as possible. And I repeat, most of them did not die as soon as they retired. As a matter of fact, for that handful who did pass not long after retirement, everybody knew most of it came from working on their feet too long after a certain age. Sometimes an older persons body will shut down like that, not long after they retire, if they've been use to constantly being on their feet, regardless of what kind of work. They need to be extremely careful during their transition into retirement. Anyway, unlike the older man in this article, no way was any older co-workers scared to the point they'd rather keep working. However, I do remember this one White co-worker kept working pass his 70's because his wife wouldn't let him smoke in the house, or he couldn't stand to be around his wife all day,or too long, or something like that. Now that probably isn't too uncommon, and I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the main reasons this 72 year old man would rather keep working. He might be doing it to save his marriage.

My point is, that talk of people dying right after retirement, should be taking with a grain of salt. Most of the time, that's said to keep people working til they drop. I've seen that happen too. That's even more sad. Then a lot of times, people say that because they still have to work, and they try to psych their minds into believing they'd rather be at work than at home bored. Now if this mans son said that his father fears he may get bored and die, if his father truly believes this, then that's bad enough. But a blanket statement like, "he knows people retire, get bored and die", is wrong. I'm seeing people enjoying their retirement big time, especially the ones who know how to stay healthy. And they're much better ways of doing this, then to stay on job. The truth is, this older man is going to have to stop working sooner or later because of his age, or they"ll eventually have to let him go. Going home to die after that is not the way to go. Some of this may sound a little redundant from my last large post on this thread, but those older former co-workers I worked with as a guard just came to mind, and none of them had this kinda trapped attitude. Then I think of the older co-workers who retired at my more recent IT job, the job I retired from. None of those retirees died, except one this past March, who was sort of an uncle figure to me, although we didn't agree on much. But the advice he gave me that I did agree with, will last for the rest of my life. He was 79, and he retired in 2013. I believe he may have had prostate problems. But the rest of the retirees are still kicking it, and traveling around with their young wives...lol. Like I said in the thread about actor Geofrey Owens, a lot of things open up to you when you get 55 and older. You just need to have the will to find them and enjoy them. You don't want to wait until you're 80. But you can still get down at that age if you know what you're doing.

The ONLY thing you can say in their (longtime bussers) defense is that they didn't have the same level of access to resources, information, and technology that we do today.

But yeah I agree, this shyt is pathetic.
