I don't know where anyone is getting their information about having over 10k in cash is illegal. It's required for all banks to file a Currency Transaction Report anytime someone withdraws, deposit or exchange over 10k in cash. You also have to disclose anytime you leave the country with over 10k in cash, because if you don't and Customs finds out, they will hold you up and question you about it.
If the IRS decides to audit you, they will question you about the transaction because it doesn't leave a paper trail. If you decided to structure the transaction by lowering the amount you withdraw so you won't trigger the report, then it raises a red flag and Suspicious Activity Report is filed. (9k one day, 8k the next day etc.) It's a federal crime, so good luck trying to explain yourself and getting off easy. Claiming stupidity won't help at this point.
