That's pretty much most African countries. The biggest ethnic groups simply overshadow the smaller ones in terms of culture and influence that they become the face of the country. The reality is every African country is very diverse.

What you have in many African countries is a state/republic of many different nations.

A Nation can be a state, but a state is not necessarily a nation. There are differences.

Japan is a nation and state. Nigeria is a state. Igbo is a nation, Hausa is a nation, Yoruba is a nation, but they are all housed within Nigeria. It can make development very difficult.

You don't say? Might makes right? :ohhh:

So what's fundamentally wrong if Africans do it on themselves? You say Africans have no choice because they were conquered and therefore must speak it.

History is written by the victors.

.

I actuslly plan on learning some African langauges in the future so who are you talking too?
Don’t twist my words

And your going to learn “some African languages”:comeon:word my nikka?

Like @The Odum of Ala Igbo said...it's a third party language.."neutral".

Whatever language is chosen carries an inherent advantage in all areas of life. Say there are 26 tribes named after the alphabet and Tribe A's language is chosen as the official one ...guess the members of which tribe will do best in national exams...guess who will then dominate top positions in the country...guess who will dominate media as the group best able to speak that language. You think ppl will stand for this because it's a fellow African language? :heh:

As opposed to settling on a neutral third language that every group has to learn.

Might makes right.

The Philipines have over a hundred language groups, but guess what the official language is Filipino.

How come they don't rely on Spanish like that?

Nothing is impossible.

How is English neutral if it was forced upon you? :jbhmm:

English wasn't no damn elective class in Igboland.

The reason English, French and to a lesser extent Portuguese work as National languages is because many African countries are really states of multiple nations

Nation: a large aggregate of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory.

Igbo is a nation of people. There is an Igbo language, style of dressing and even style of government/politics. The same with Hausa, Yoruba and the rest.

With English, you have a language that neither of these nations within the Nigerian state are native to, so you get a neutral language where no one has any real stake in.

But the moment you go to the respective nation within the Nigerian state, so Igboland, Yorubaland, Hausaland, Akwa Ibomland etc you will encounter people speaking their respective nation's language.

This is why you often see Francophone African countries with a more 'unified' culture (even down to their currency, although that is a totally different conversation) whereas Anglophone countries are a lot more dynamic. Think of the top Sub-saharan African nations: Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda etc. All Anglophone.

This is a really great topic honestly.
it is amazing to see how booming economically Kenya is these past few years. everybody and their grandma has some type of business poppin or entreprenurial pursuit going. it's contagious. such a huge contrast to the chains you feel in a lot of francophone countries whenever you try to get any type of business off the ground.

This is what I want to see first hand next year. Linked up with a lady in Cote d'Ivoire who wants to show me around.

Its obvious he doesnt realize one of these countries are probably more/just as ethnically diverse than the North american continent.
fukk are you talking about?

They still speak English in India
They still speak English in Hong Kong
They still speak English in Singapore
They still speak Dutch in Indonesia
They still speak Portuguese in Goa
They still speak Portuguese in Macau
They still speak Spanish & English in the Philippines. Not only that, but they still actively practice that very European creation of Catholicism.

Nah bruh. None of those countries put European languages first. They all have their languages listed and official. National language of India is Hindi. Then English.

Notice the difference:

Cameroon has two different European language listed as official. :mindblown::snoop:

Not one fukking African language bro.

Cameroon is one country where there is no ethnic group completely dominant over the other to have the most right to be an official face and language of the country. Add that with both English and French being spoken, it's just not possible.
