Truth era Beans

you're right about self destruction, i'm thinking "we all in the same gang" was more like thatI feel you and agree that this has always been hip hop, and to a larger extent, the black communities double edged sword.
shyt, I'm guilty of it myself at times.
The one thing I disagree on is the Self Destruction and Let's Get Free comments.
The rappers on Self Destruction were for the most part not rappers that glorified the negative aspects of the streets.
You could say KRS was on that street shyt on Criminal Minded, but for the most part, everybody that participated on that record (KRS, Ms. Melodie, D-Nice, Lyte, Stetsasonic, Heavy, Doug, and PE) was pretty much on some conscious, community based shyt, or at least strictly party shyt for most of their careers.
And I don't recall Dead Prez glorifying any street shyt outside of banging on Police and the Government on Let's Get Free.
The other rappers you named (Jada, Sigel, Jay, and Nas(to a lesser extant than the others)) was always conscious when it was convenient, but they mostly sold thinly veiled, incredible sounding poison to the community.

He wasn't even the best on the Roc though![]()
Career wise? Yes Jay is better, but Sigel topped him on alot of tracks they did together and if Sig woulda concentrated on his rap career and stayed out them streets he woulda had a epic career. He was that good.
I mean, Jay is arguably the GOAT.
After Jay, I think it's definitely Beans.
Beans got Jay on several tracks, and at the peak of his career, Beans was my favorite rapper probably, and arguably skill-wise top 10 to do it at his peak. I held him in the same vein as prime era Scarface or prime era Prodigy, etc.
But the best Beans album isn't better than the second best Jay album. And yall know this too.

That's because Jay made sure he got all the choice beats, had the biggest budgets, bigger features, etc.
gotta rep you on all this.. especially since lets get free is probably my top album when i think about it. i play it front to back at least once a season.. and run through a few choice songs at least monthly.. i love that album. Now, All In The Same Gang was a different story
Their intentions were good though
I gotta revisit Let’s Get Free, haven’t heard it in awhile.
Easily my favorite album of the late 90s and The Pistol was one of the coldest joints up there![]()
