Been in Barcelona the past few days...

Very beautiful city. Weather is almost perfect everyday, food is excellent, nightlife will have you struggling to keep up, a lot of pros about this spot...

BUT!

Spanish and Catalonian people are not used to seeing American brothers around their city like that. They're used to Africans selling them shyt they don't want by the beach, but they aren't used to Black people from America just vacationing in their city. There isn't is racism (that exists), and I'd just describe it as a complete lack of awareness about African American anything and people.

We need to get more brothers out here for real.

Right, its interesting because, again, they don't see those images as racist because there hasn't been a collective check Spanish people have had to do in regards to Black people. If you look into it further, they haven't even addressed racism in regards to black people as a society, so theres this "sweep it under the rug" mentality people have. Combine that with a very ethnically homogenized region and you get what you have.

I will say that everyone I've met has been really dope and laid back but LOL at the old Spanish dude who crossed the other side of the street and ducked under a bike rack and some other obstacle course shyt just to avoid me

Would you say they warmed up to you after they found out you're American (i.e. heard your accent)? I always feel like I have to be scrupulous with where I vacation because as a black person there are just certain no-go areas. & i agree with you, a lot of the times, the racism doesn't stem from malice, it stems from pure ignorance. it's just like this forum, how people are always constantly throwing darts at cultures & peoples they have no clue about.

The people I've met that have been the coolest are the ones who don't mind speaking English with me. You can look like you rolled off the Amistad, but if you can speak Spanash/Catalan, people are going to be way more down. My Spanish is at a struggle level, so its more of that than anything. Most people I've seen aren't really into speaking English (even though they all do!).
