Gov. Abbott declares February 2 'Chris Kyle Day'

TYLER, TEXAS (KETK) — The man known as "America's Most Lethal Sniper" will now have a day named in his honor.

On Friday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared February 2 "Chris Kyle Day."

“America is the brightest beacon of freedom the world has ever known for one simple reason – because of you – our veterans, the men and women who put service above self,” Governor Abbott said. “As Governor, I will constantly work to find ways to help our veterans. It’s our duty to help those who helped make America so exceptional. And it’s our duty to honor those whose sacrifice has preserved our freedom.”

The former Navy SEAL and author of the best-selling autobiography "American Sniper," a book that recapped moments of Kyle's deployments in Iraq during the worst part of insurgency, holds the most career sniper kills (150) in United States military history.

His most famous kill shot was taken from 2,100 yards away.

Kyle, a native of Odessa, was shot and killed in January, 2013, while allegedly working with a veteran who suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

On Monday, February 11, 2013, Kyle was honored at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

“Chris Kyle was the public face of an anonymous breed of American warrior who are handed the hardest missions and assume the largest risks," Former Governor Rick Perry said. "Chris was among the very best at what he did, and he saved countless American lives in the process. Our state and our nation suffered a profound loss with his passing. I am honored to have known Chris and to have called him my friend. Anita and I send our deepest condolences to his wife, Taya, his children and the thousands of service members that were his extended family.”The following day, Kyle was taken to his final resting place in a 200-mile procession that began in Midlothian, Texas, and ended in Austin.

After a $105-million opening weekend, the highest-grossing January movie release ever, "American Sniper," directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Bradley Cooper, the continues to smash cinema records.
