Maybe their goal isn't to be popular but just to have friends who don't care if they are attractive?
Are the other black nerds not ino the same things? They can't make friends, and introduce them to new things? No, that's not easy, but like I said, a lot of these people end up letting their white friends get away with saying raciat things, and in order to fit in with their white friends, they put down black people.
So you get made fun of for liking anime with black friends, but you call black people lazy and stupid, and say we deserve to be racially profiled in order to keep your white friends, BUT hey, you get to enjoy Sailor Moon with them. They make jokes at your expense, but that's better than their potentially black friends.
