Smart move sign him before he hits open market. Dont wanna take the chance of some squad offering him some crazy amount. Then...you gotta match. He'll get a year or two off that extension before they cut him. In the long run its smart money wise

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Marvin Lewis made it clear -- theCincinnati Bengals want to extend quarterback Andy Dalton's contract sooner rather than later.

"It's a big piece of our puzzle that's holding out there nebulous right now," the Bengals coach said. "So we'd like to get it done to where it makes sense for us and makes sense for him and we can preserve a small portion of the team going forward with him."

Dalton, a second-round draft pick in 2011, has one year left on his rookie deal. But the Bengals want to make sure he doesn't go anywhere when that contract ends.

Dalton has led Cincinnati to the playoffs in each of his three seasons with the team. He has started every game since his rookie season and has thrown 80 touchdown passes and 49 interceptions.

He also has been criticized for his lack of playoff success. But Lewis is not among those critics. Nor is team owner Mike Brown, who earlier this week echoed Lewis' desire to sign Dalton to a long-term deal.

"Andy's being compared with a lot of players who didn't play for [their] first three years," Lewis said. "What he's accomplished has been great. We want to continue to grow with him. He has all the work ethic and dynamics of everything. That's the reason we drafted him to begin with. That hasn't changed.

"All he's done is make good on everything we thought he would. One player doesn't lose a playoff game; the football team does."

:mjpls: Not on defense. And if it were that talented, how many players that left for more money went on to become pro bowl caliber? Dallas is a 5-11 team without Romo.

That's more on Jerry and the crap coaching than anything else (well a large majority of it is Jerry). Romo isn't clutch at all. Plus they gave him that huge contract when they didn't even need to. They could have spent that money on defense.

They'll probably give him around 12-14 per year.

Personally I wouldn't be so enthusiastic about locking down a mentally weak qb. He's pretty good during the regular season, but he had a mental break down during that playoff game last year.

Plus the coach doesn't make things any better.

North Jersey but I miss Cali :sadcam:
Romo isn't clutch at all.

:mpls:

Romo had 4 fourth quarter comebacks last year.

5 in 2012
4 in 2011

And he had the highest passer rating in the 4th quarter last year.

the past two season fielded the worst defenses in cowboys history. Romo constantly bails out those defenses but they never close teams out. Can't put it all on Romo.

Romo brought Dallas back in this game and look what the defense does.

Despite that play Romo brought them down for another TD and the defense gave up a similar run on the very next possession.

Would you put Romo up there with the top 5 QBs? Also would you pay that guy top 5 QB money?

Agreed. IDGAF about his feelings or going into the season without a contract. Oh well. If he makes the next step, good. But it wasn't a mental break down in that one playoff game. In ALL 3 fukkING PLAYOFF GAMES he shyt the bed completely. COMPLETELY. Let him fukking earn an extension. Fans of this team and the people in charge are so fukking scared of being as shytty as we were in the 90s again that they think the best move is to lock in mediocrity. Man, I'm of the mind to think you do NOT overpay for a mediocre QB. Jason Campbell really couldn't even do worse than Andy with this defense and offensive weapons.

Regular season doesn't mean shyt to me, man. Earn it in the playoffs, and I'll be happy to overpay for ya, you shytty ginger.

I think this offseason I realized just how much I hate both Marvin and Andy Dalton. Just a bunch of motherfukkers content with being AVERAGE. Bein a fan of this shyt hurts sometimes because u know Mikey is gonna do jussssst enough to make not everyone cancel their season tickets. fukk being anything more than just competitive tho

:mjpls: Now you want to switch it to is he top 5?

1. You don't have to be a top 5 qb to win a title or titles.
2. What Romo got paid is the going rate for a franchise caliber QB and Romo IS a franchise caliber QB.
3. QB's get paid the most unless that team has a journeyman stop gap QB or a mid round rookie.

Every time someone criticizes Romo and someone else responds with numbers and facts they try to move the goal posts. Romo has flaws but his defense has been more flawed. Jones spent a lot of money on defense to players who haven't lived up to their potential. Ware got paid a lot but rarely made big plays in the clutch on defense. Ratliff got paid, then quit. Spencer was a first round pick and admitted to not playing hard.

Then Romo had to deal with them not upgrading the offensive line until recently.
