Just gave this a spin my firstvtime listening to anything from griselda

these guys really bout that life or is it jus hip hop?
Aw man. This isn't a bad project by any means but definitely one of the worst to start with

Check out Tana Talk 3 and From King to a God.

They were definitely about that life BTW but now I highly doubt they'd jeopardize it. Buffalo is especially messed up because it's such a small place. If there's beef with someone, there's not a lot of options to allow for time and distance to cool things off.

There's times the thought crosses my mind that Benny is basically J.R. Writer with better beats.
I've heard people say the same, lol.

If you've heard one Benny project, you've basically heard them all.
Benny been mid for a minute
I just gotta say that it's been surreal to see this opinion echoed so much. It's been real strange to see things shift, because after Tana Talk 3 and Plugs 1 Benny was like one of my top 3 favorite artists, and I was super excited to see where he was taking his career. Plugs 1 and Bandana dropped in the same few weeks and you couldn't tell me shyt about Benny and his potential.

And on paper he hasn't made any big missteps or anything like that. Not only that, but I think his flows and deliveries have actually gotten a little more versatile from Tana 3 to now. And on top of that I wanted him to use more modern production, and he did that too.

He's done all of that, been well received by critics in the process and gained new fans...and yet I still can't help but be a little less interested by his music for some reason. There's a weird disconnect somewhere where I'm enjoying his music for the moment when it drops, but yet I'm not revisiting it very much. I don't know why. And last thing is that I do see some long time Griselda heads saying the same things about him.

EDIT: For some reason I get the impression that Benny is too cool for rap, or that he's still on that "I'm a hustler not a rapper" vibe. I don't get the vibe that Benny is super into music if that makes any sense? It almost seems like music is a means to an end for him.

His shyt is just too functional and robotic to me.

He's got some slick, creative lines about drug dealing but it's too cold. I don't feel like I know who he is as an artist. Even when he get's introspective, which is rare, it doesn't sound natural. This to me is why Conway is much better balanced artist.

And I like Benny's music but I see some posts on here that are like "Benny is the best rapper in the world bar none" and I'm just :mjtf:. Dudes out here talking about him as a future GOAT when he's just doing shyt NY mixtape rappers were doing in the 2000s.

I mean I mostly agree. I do feel kind of bad saying that he's only doing what mixtape rappers were doing in the 2000's, because I genuinely think Tana Talk 3 and Plugs 1 are incredible projects. And there are dozens of mixtape rappers form the 2000's that have never strung together 2 projects remotely as good of the quality as those. And maybe people want to say those projects are held up heavily by production and features if they want to, but still. I think Benny deserves some props for that. Tana Talk 3 got me fired up about music in a way that I hadn't been in a minute, and I feel bad just writing that off just for the fact that I'm not as interested in him as an artist 3 years later.
:patrice:
But at the same time I don't think I can fundamentally put a real strong argument up against anything you're saying. Benny actually dropped one of his best and most interesting verses to me last year, but it's a damn shame that it was on another artist's project. :snoop: I'd like more of this content from him

All of this is exactly how I've always felt about his shyt.

I like his lines here and there, but his flow has always been stiff and kinda mechanical. There's nothing really soulful about his shyt, or any personality to what he's saying. It's basically the same structure and format, with the same content over and over again. It gets tired after awhile. He's witty, and he has clever punches at times, but that's not enough to hold people forever. We saw a million MC's doing this already on mixtapes 20 years ago.

I can listen to WSG and Conway all day, both for different reasons. But they're both better artists. Benny is a little dry. He can rap, and he's running with a team that's spent mad years winning, so that helps. But he's not doing anything we haven't seen a million times before, as an artist. The shelf-life for dudes like him is limited because you have to bring a lot of shyt to the table, to last. He's one-dimensional.

At this point, people are just regurgitating that point for anything less than an outright dud, which they probably won't admit to.

This wasn't a bad project but he could've kept it in the studio. Man hasn't moved me since Burden of Proof. Not that long ago but when you keep flooding the streets with mid...:unimpressed:

No doubt. But it's weird because there are artists that are every bit as one dimensional that I find more interesting. I think Pusha T and Boldy James are also 90% drug game content rappers, but they have other aspects whether it be their voices or flows (or something) that makes me find their music a little bit more interesting. I'd also like to hear Benny play around with more flows and cadences. I was real impressed with how Boldy James on this new Bo Jackson album added so many new flows to his bag. I'd like to hear Benny throw some more curve balls with his flow into the mix.

I'm being a little critical but I'm also holding him to a high standard, because Tana Talk 3 really is one of my favorite albums of the 2010's. I will always give all of his projects a fair listen on the strength of him just the strength of him giving me that album.
