Benny the Butcher - Pyrex Picasso EP (Discussion Thread)

EDIT: For some reason I get the impression that Benny is too cool for rap, or that he's still on that "I'm a hustler not a rapper" vibe. I don't get the vibe that Benny is super into music if that makes any sense? It almost seems like music is a means to an end for him.

This is it. And I'm sitting here racking my brain trying to come up with a comparison that I feel fits but I'm coming up blank

No doubt. But it's weird because there are artists that are every bit as one dimensional that I find more interesting. I think Pusha T and Boldy James are also 90% drug game content rappers, but they have other aspects whether it be their voices or flows (or something) that makes me find their music a little bit more interesting. I'd also like to hear Benny play around with more flows and cadences. I was real impressed with how Boldy James on this new Bo Jackson album added so many new flows to his bag. I'd like to hear Benny throw some more curve balls with his flow into the mix.

I'm being a little critical but I'm also holding him to a high standard, because Tana Talk 3 really is one of my favorite albums of the 2010's. I will always give all of his projects a fair listen on the strength of him just the strength of him giving me that album.

True. With Boldy, I think we'd all agree that it's the production. He's definitely not as much of a draw away from the ALC production, lol. We all wanna hear those ALC beats. Pusha has always been able to make any kind of record. 23 years in, he's always been mad personable, funny, clever and can do things in a way that keeps him interesting, even when he's kinda redundant with his content. That's why he's been around so long.

I think with Benny, he's kinda stood out during a time when newer MC's are well below where he is lyrically. He can rap so much doper than a lot of other people out right now, but he hasn't really had to step his shyt up to be a better artist. So I think when you drop so many projects, people can get bored with hearing the same thing over and over again. You don’t really see the growth from project to project. He's kinda been stuck in the same place, doing something we've all seen done to death in the past.

Might be an unpopular take but I started finding Boldy way doper as an emcee. I like him even away from Alc beats. I really liked the projects he did with Sterling Toles and Real Bad Man. I legitimately think his rapping his a solid A- outside of only having one topic. I think he out-rhymed must if the guests on his new album. I don’t wanna derail the thread but I think if you listen to Bo Jackson and then backwards to even we recent as Tea in China that you’ll hear a big improvement.

Boldy's music feels much more human to me. He has a way of expressing pain alongside the drug and money talk that is powerful. It almost reminds me of Prodigy in the way it might just be one or two lines in an otherwise hard, grimey song. But he'll say some shyt that feels like it comes from the soul.

A lot of his shyt is feel understated and low key, while Benny is trying to sound like the cooleest guy in the room.

His rhymes feel less structured and predicitable as well.

The discussion on the last few pages is why I always do bewildered when people would say stuff like Benny is the best in Griselda or some would say he’s the only dope one.


Hall and Nash were always the heart of the group imo. Benny is the least likely of the 3 to drop a complete dud, but he’s also not gonna have you stuck on a particular song or album like the other 2
