Bernie Sanders Unveils $150 Billion Plan To Expand High-Speed Internet Access

In his sweeping "High-Speed Internet for All" proposal, Sanders calls for broadband to be considered a public utility, much like electricity, and calls access "a basic human right." The plan would provide $150 billion in grants and technical assistance to states and communities for the purpose of building out their own "democratically controlled, co-operative, or open access broadband networks." As part of the new plan, Sanders defines "broadband" as 100 Mbps down and 10 Mbps up, which is significantly higher than the Federal Communications Commission standard of 25 Mbps down and 3 Mbps up. If elected president, Sanders said he would also work to restore net neutrality and ban internet and cable companies from instituting data caps and throttling consumer access to the internet.

Over how many years?

If that's spread out it ain't even much money. Trump has already increased the military's ANNUAL budget by over $150 billion since he came to power and no one batted an eye. And that $150 billion didn't do shyt for the average American.

If you look at the actual plan there's a ton of monopoly-busting and money-saving measures in it too:

This is not the year 2004
There is no need for free high speed internet.
You need just free wifi, which is probably more complicated & expensive.

PCs are gonna die, but everyone will have handheld devices.

But is it a human right? I dont think so.
We need to be less connected not more

Idk why we fight on things that are necessary. Also it's 150 billion cause they didn't do it when we gave them 50 billion and they pocketed the money. Did yall forget about that? :usure:

The economy will only continue to keep getting more digital. Not addressing access will just leave more and more people behind.

If it breaks up the duopolies I'm all for it. Telecoms have too much strangled in most cities.

Personally, unless there's an independent third option, you're getting fukked when it comes to Internet access.
Google literally had to pull up all the fiber they laid in Kentucky And leave the city because AT&T fukked them in the courts here by not sharing utility polls which made them “shallow trench” the cables and the cables kept coming up out of the road. They literally try to eliminate competition at every turn

Yeah I remember that. It goes to show the petty levels they'd go to protect their stagnant cash cows.

If they could roll airtight fiber protection they could technically use city owned sewage pipes and lay it inside, they could dodge new infrastructure and private poles. But, I don't know how effective or good that would be overall.
