They do, they’re treating this as the typical government furlough when they can’t come to an agreement. This situation is completely different, all of these companies furloughing their employees already have a plan to eventually let a lot of them go.

Furlough often precedes lay offs, I remember it well from 2008. You get reduced hours, for a certain amount of time. It's unofficially a lay off, pretty much a purgatory. How long are you furloughed, before it becomes unemployed?

yep many companies furlough now to get out of paying severance because you can furlough employees and not pay severance packages while during a layoff you do.

Nah more likely another giant electronics retailer will emerge. When I was a little kid it was Montgomery Wards and Sears, then Best Buy and Circuit City. In a regular economy there is room for this kinda retailer.
