They also played in a weaker era, and they were 2 top 10 players. No other team in that era had that luxury.

But shaq and Kobe played in a better defensive era. That has to he taken into account as well

League Average eFG%

'80s: .491
'90s: .488
'00s: .484

League Average PPG

'80s: 109.3
'90s: 101.0
'00s: 96.9

% of Points from the Freethrow line

'80s: 20.3
'90s: 19.8
'00s: 19.5

And a era of lower DRtg's.

As for Top ten players, magic and Kareem were both top 5 for most of the 80's... Who else had that luxary?

Everyone knew the west was were all the comp was. The fact that Kobe/Shaq comp was 3 rounds in the West vs East teams being able cakewalk and only play one tough series against a good team only when they finally got to the Finals.

That's true, but the pace from the 80's was not played in the 00's so it would make sense for defenses to be better.

More posessions = more shots on goal = more PPG.

The west had some good comp, but it's not as tough as some people make it out to be.

The Spurs had Duncan (top 3 player) an aging D Rob, and a green Parker and Manu in the early 00's. Parker as a rookie was benched in the 03 finals in favor of speedy claxton, the spurs weren't a viable thread to the lakers.

The Kings had a solid team top 10 player in C Webb, and a bunch of good players, no secondary superstar to push them over the top, although they did get robbed in the 02 WCF, but that's not for this thread.

The Mavs had allstars, but didn't play and D, and Dirk broke his jaw in 03 when they could've beaten the spurs

The Twolves only had 04 when they surrounded KG with a capable team and they lost both their PG's before they fell to the lakers.

For example

1987 Lakers playoff competition before finals

37 win nuggets/39 win sonics/42 win warriors

2001 Lakers playoff competition to finals

58 win spurs/50 win Blazers/55 win kings

:deadmanny: not even comparable none of the 80's teams would even make the playoffs in the 00's

Lmao. Guess you weren't old enough to witness His Airness

:rudy: I never said best winners, I said best chemistry and most exciting. I never saw Mj and Pip throwing 90'+ oops or throwing up blind lobs and they know exactly where each other is. Their chemistry is unmatched and they're pretty much a lock for the finals for he next 5 years

In the finals? Yea but the finals was irrelavant in early 00's. But the Competetion between the 80's west and 00's west is a joke. Magic and Kareem had years where they didnt have to beat a 50 win team to get to the finals:deadrose:

That's 00's eastern conference bad

Those early 2000s west teams are so overrated it's not funny. Just because a team wins 50 or 60 games doesn't mean they are built to contend for championships in the playoffs. Either of Rockets teams that he Lakers lost to in the 80's would have been a problem in the 2000s and certainly would have won more than the 40 and 51 games they won in the years they knocked the Lakers off. The Kings, Blazer, Mavs teams the Lakers regularly stomped would have been just another deep squad that can score a lot in the 80's. Also with the way that Shaq/Kobe teamed liked to teter on the edge a 3 game first round likely would've fukked them over once or twice.
