Best Final Fantasy game?

I was wondering when someone was going to say Tactics...
The problem with XII's story was the fact that it had **** ALL to do with the player characters. If we were playing as, say, Bagranth and Larsa the entire game, I guarantee that this complaint wouldn't pop up as much, because a key element of a character's appeal is how they interact with the events of the story, and everybody except for Basch and Ashe were peripheral characters AT BEST (and Ashe is barely likeable for a good chunk of the story, at that).
With that said, my favorite story was FFX (runner up was Vagrant Story, if we can count that. Otherwise, it was FFVIII) and my favorite gameplay being FFXII (runner up was Tactics and FFX).

Gotta go with VI. Most diverse cast, good music, one of the better storylines in an FF game. My 2nd favorite would be X.

Does Final Fantasy Tactics count? i've always preferred strategy RPG's and this story is the GOAT in any of the games to me.
Other than that, I liked FFX the most with the SNES ones right behind that. I really liked FF2 even though it never gets much love.

Tactics definitely has one of the the better stories. I'm just not a big fan of strategy RPG games. I actually prefer Chrystal Chronicles

Final Fantasy 6 and it's not even close.

So ya'll just gonna ignore me asking about IX?
9 is maybe the most underrated. It had a great story. The best mini-game, and the gameplay is clearly a nod to the 1st 3 games. It came out at the end of the PS1 lifecycle so most people missed it. It was their loss. You can still cop it for around 20 bucks. It's worth it.
Mine go 6, 7, 8.
9 was so superior but i just couldnt connect with the party
8 is so unjustly hated on...the shyt is damn near perfect until that last disc... FF8 without that last disc + the random ass final boss is basically awesome. the Draw system was bad but it didnt break the game...
oh and the story of 12 sucked but it was DAMN fun to play...the Gilgamesh fight in 12 was some of the most fun ive had in a boss battle in a LOOOOOOONG time

I can't for the life of me remember the mini-game in 9...I remember the card game in 8 which was fun and I LOVED Blitz Ball in X (especially with the whole recruiting players and improving them concepts)...but I don't recall the mini-game in 9 at all.
