Me too :wow:
Just copped it to. :wow:
Saw it and snatched it off the rack quick fast :wow:

I copped it from a hole in the wall record store called Recycled Sounds in KC in the 90's.

It's scratched all to hell but :manny:

Where were you in 1991?

Fred.

559 w 149th street in Harlem. Grandma lived down the hill 200 w 145th street and I was always back and forth.

12 and 13 years old. 7th and 8th grade. 1991 was the year I lost my virginity. 1991 will always be IMO the greatest year in hip hop history. I once wrote a autobio/comdey based on everything that happened to me in 1991 with all the hottest songs from that year as the soundtrack. OPP was the theme song because OPP is the theme song of 1991.

1st time I heard Mind Playing Tricks On Me was July 1991 in New Orleans. It was the hottest rap record in New Orleans. My older cousin would hold the radio in his hands and recite along as Bill spit his verse. I thought it was some down south shyt, When I got back to NYC....No one had heard the song. It didnt hit nyc till like September. When it did hit nyc...it shut shyt down. The song was popular before the video. Now the video itself is next level and innovative. If u notice none of the rappers are rapping to the verses while looking in the camera...instead they are acting out the lyrics bar for bar. That was the first rap video to ever do that according to Ralph McDaniels. There was 2 versions. The clean radio version and the album version. And everyone in the know knew every verse of each version by heart.

OPP is still #1.

Speaking of OPP

Was I the only one thrown off by “5 little letters that are missing” on the last P?

:lupe:

That verse was for the ladies that was creepin and he rhymed the word he was hinting at...

“Leanest”

“Meanest”

What rhymes with leanest or meanest?

Classic Niccas
that black sheep single was '92.
it may have had a late '91 release date but it was really a '92 jumpoff.
shoot, I remember the video still getting crazy burn when grant hill threw that pass to laetner in the spectrum. OWW.

should replace it with chubb rock "treat em right".
how the hell did chubb rock not get nominated??

chubb rock, rampage, naughty and jeff prince.
its a photo finish, so i'll give my vote to the hometown, jeff prince "summertime".

I would say LL Cool J should be in the mix, but I see LL was taken care of with the rampage nod. that's a real good look.

None of these songs were bigger than Summertime, that shyt comes on today and you will see everyone nodding their heads to that shyt. They will he playing that at BBQ's in the summer 20 years from now and it's already been getting burn for 20 years.

OPP was up there too.

I can tell OPP & Summertime split the vote. while the geto boys took darn near all the purist party votes and ran away with the poll.

Summertime had a TV show behind it.
OPP was almost as big.
I just looked up the billboards, Mind was way bigger than Cube.

ehh

in fairness, MTV had a whole campaign behind OPP.

I only saw summertime on bel-air when they debuted it.

If summertime doesn't win then it's because everyone here is being a revisionist.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's Will Smith but like the percolator this song got burn on the radio every summer from 1990-2000.

For what it's worth black sheep choice is yours was my favorite on the list

haha

my man mentioned the perculator.

had to dap that.

Swear y'all bout to make me start making playlists for each years with this shyt

I always did that.

I guess its why I have a knack for these yearly retrospective threads.

Choice is Yours been in national commercials as recently as last year..

Testament to this monumental year.

Outside of Cypress Hill, I wouldnt argue anybody down on their pick for the other contenders

Some of y'all should post where you were at and peers/fam reaction to these singles. Its dope to hear different perspectives from coast to coast.

I was in Richmond and Oakland CA. When these singles were dropping....Just off the dome...Junior High going into my freshman year of high school....

Mind Playing Tricks. shyt was all over our radio. You'd be up in record stores and the shyt would be playing. Old heads loved this song like my pops. His EXACT words was that's some "real shyt those boys are talking about." If a radio was on somewhere this shyt was ON. Video was crazy, ED Lover was clownin on YO!MTV saying how crazy Bushwick looked in the video. I wanted the album cover for a poster. Bought this tape the first week it dropped.

Summertime. Same radio play. Everybody n they mama loved this song. Still does in 2018. Still gets play on the radio out here.

OPP was popular on TV/Video out here but it wasn't in them streets like that. You'd catch a couple of birds singing the hook clownin n whatnot around the way but that's about it. It lit up The Box, had promos parodies, shyt was fresh and new and of course got much radio burn.

Couple of songs that got left off the list that were HUGE out here I'm the street was. DJ Quik - Tonite, MC Breed -Aint No Future, and NWA's Alrwayz Into Something. Every single ride you heard driving by was BUMPIN one of these three singles. Tonite was played at every party, we knew all the words, shyt STAYED on the Box, muthafukkaz had the tape playing on the bus, outside the complex....Same shyt with Ain't No Future. That muthafukka was so popular around my way an unmarked swooped on us playin that shyt. Y'all realized that shyt had us confused and took a minute to process.
