Alright y'all now that the voting is finished we move on to the second part of this whole process: the weighting system.
Q: What is the weighting system?
A: The weighting system is a system whereby we equate different point structures for different years. What this means is that not every year is treated equally. Some years are more competitive than others, and I feel as though the top 5 finishers in a more competitive year should be rewarded more than those who placed in less competitive years.
For example, let's go by the assumption that we believe 1996 to be more competitive than 2010. Tupac won the MVP in 1996 and Kanye in 2010. Since Tupac's victory was more impressive and worthy of recognition, Tupac will amass more points for that MVP award than Kanye did for his. That's the basic premise for how the weighting system works.
Q: Who is eligible for the weighting system?
You remember those point totals I gave out to the top 5 finishers of each year? MVP gets 10, 2nd place gets 5 and so on? Well I amassed all those totals up for the artists purely on raw votes (i.e. without the weight system). Any artist that has amassed 10 or more TOTAL points throughout the series is eligible for the weighting system as I seek to finalise a top 10 overall by the end of the process.
Once the weighting system is applied to each year that we went through (1985-2015), ALL FIVE placers of each year are affected by the weighting, not just the MVPs I referred to in my above example. Whatever multiplier is assigned to each year is consistent across the board for all placers. In other words, if the multiplier is 1.5, the 5th place finisher gets the 1 raw point multiplied by 1.5, 4th place the 2 pts x 1.5 etc.
Q: How does the weighting system work?
The weighting system works by way of applying a multiplier function. I am going to categorise the years into five main multiplier groupings (plus one extra special grouping). They are as follows:
1.0 multiplier: this is for the weakest years in hip-hop, typically where the releases weren't strong and the competition was hardly notable or impressive.
1.2 multiplier: a slight step up from the 1.0. Not quite at the average/typical level hip-hop should be at but it's not quite at the bottom either.
1.5 multiplier: bang down the middle. MOST of your year picks should lie in this category.
1.8 multiplier: a strong year for hip-hop. Better than average but not one of the GOAT years either. Very competitive but not elite level.
2.0 multiplier: GOAT level years in hip-hop with great releases and superb competition.
2.5 multiplier: this category is for YOUR PERSONAL GOAT year. Whichever year is GOAT to you in terms of competition, releases, artists and whatever belongs in this category. Remember...only ONE year goes here.
My recommendation is that you have the most selections in the 1.5 category, which a large number equally distributed in the 1.0 and 1.2 category. 1.8 should come next and then 2.0. Obviously, one year will go in the 2.5 multiplier. You can do this however you want but this is my personal recommendation and a reflection of my personal choices.
Just in case you don't get the process, this is kinda what I'm looking for as an example:
1.0: 1988, 1989, 2011, 2015 etc.
1.2: 2000, 2014 etc.
1.5: 2001, 2002, 2004, 2009 etc.
1.8: 1990 etc.
2.0: 1985, 1986, 2007 etc.
2.2: your GOAT year e.g. 1997
make sure to fill all the options from 1985 to 2015.
Q: How are the results determined?
PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY!
You must PM me your results as I showed in the example template above. Each of you will submit me your weighting system classing and entitle the PM "Bracoli Weighting System" so I know what to expect.
I will tally up all the placements and for each year in question, whatever multiplier it is assigned most frequently will be the final multiplier for that year. If I tally in all the 1985 options and I find it is most commonly given a 1.2 multiplier, when it comes down to the final process, 1985 will end up with a 1.2 multiplier. That means that LL Cool J (MVP of 1985) will for that year get the 10 points x 1.2, along with the other 4 placers that year scored accordingly.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Once I have worked all of this out I will make the top 10 thread from 10 to 1 based on increasing point totals order, adjusted for the weighting system.
In the interest of fairness I URGE you ALL to please be as honest as possible. For example, if you genuinely think 2009 wasn't competitive, don't give it a high score because you are a Raekwon stan. Of course I can only hope that you guys are honest about it so we get the most accurate and fair results. It would only be a deserving end to a great series that you guys helped to make great!
If you have any questions, this is the thread to ask. Try to refrain from discussing your own personal multipliers in here but feel free to use this place as discussion for that purpose anyway. Remember...I want you to PM me your results so I can collect them.
ON FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4TH, I WILL COLLECT THE RESULTS, SO THAT IS YOUR DEADLINE! SINCE WE HAVE DIFFERENT TIME ZONES, I WILL COLLECT AT MY OWN DISCRETION SO MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT SUBMITTED AT LEAST ONE DAY BEFORE.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
The official system has been determined as of 4th Nov. Here it is:
