First,I would say we need to break the habit of walking or driving past abandoned buildings everyday in our neighborhoods without thinking about opening those locations for potential business opportunities. What we do is walk or drive past abandoned store fronts for months or years at a time until an Arab, Asian or some other non black person decides to open up a store that black people will flock to.

Little do we know, the government will help somebody start a business in an area like that. They just have to put forth an effort.

If the goal is to counter foreign merchants in the black community, who set up shop;I would say open up convenient markets that black people frequent like corner stores, laundromats, beauty supply etc...

Obtaining a license or grant from the government to help start up these types of businesses is fairly easy if the research is done by a determined motivated person.

But the hardest part will be breaking the dependent mindset many of us suffer from due to a lack of confidence in ourselves and a lack of confidence in the black collective.

Once individual black people can connect their unemployment with a lack of black businesses, then I think many of us will monitor ourt spending habits.

In the Silver Lining
the problem is.....in my humble opinion is that we moved from the hood. Back in the day every socio-economic group was in the black community. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but don't Chinatowns have every socio-economic living and working in them??? :patrice:

Yes, we want to get the degrees, get the job with the nice pay....but the VERY FIRST THING WE WANT TO DO IS LEAVE and/or IGNORE the "hood" instead of reinvigorating the hood.

Now...I'm not dense...I'm far from it.....I understand the complexities of a hypothetical black middle class exodus back to black mostly lower class communities. I understand the dynamics of different activities happening on the streets and how middle class blacks may not want to be around that...or for that matter, may not feel safe around that. I am saying, if we really want to raise the bar, there needs to be energy to towards synergy across the black socio-economic ladder. Then to top it off, we need to bring in our Caribbean and African folks into these communities too with their businesses....I'm talking law firms, I'm talking computer companies, architectural firms, grocery stores, the whole gambit....b/se a genuine connection to Africa can be mutually beneficial to African Americans and Africans alike.

Maybe I'm crazy....but I don't see us really progressing with overwhelming generational wealth without doing this....:yeshrug:
