Above the fray.
Just a rough timeline

Ready to Die came out in 1st quarter of 1994

Mr Smith came out in last quarter of 1995

Life After Death came out in 1st quarter of 1997

We have a rough idea of when BIG had this convo with the producer and a rough idea of when LAD studio sessions were taking place.
However you feel about what the producer did, it would have been about 2 years to get paid.

===============
Chris Lighty earned his stripes by making Mr Smith a hit album. It was technically his LL's comeback. His previous album was a dud and styles had changed so much that he could have gotten lost in the sauce.

If you notice, none of the singles from that album are solo songs. So, adding Lesean and basically making this a remix of her record was brilliant, but consistent with what they were doing on this album.

BIG would have absolutely done something special with this beat. He was in a creative zone from 94 on where almost everything he rapped on was FIRE. Picture what he would have done on a beat that he crafted in his head.

True but Biggie buying the tracks would have brought about a whole other set of legal issues from Bad Boy/Arista
im talking about put a $2-5k on it and invoice the label when the budget is open. I also don't think because your in a recording contact that your not able to buy a beat outright.

The last thing I would have done is expect someone to put in the work and just sit on it. Rent be due.

Artists can buy songs but usually don't as the label may not reimburse them and In some contracts the artist could pay for the song, but the label would still control it. You're right assuming someone will wait for you out of good will is risky, especially when they have a commodity that can be sold quickly.

This might be a reach but walk with me on this nikkas lol. I'm hearing some of you breaking down the timeline which is where I'm heading with this. If you guys remember the Netflix special on Big's LAD album, Klepto mentioned being in the studio when Big laid the vocals down for Who Shot Ya (while LL was there too) & he took that jab at Uncle L with: "Old school new school need to learn though......" Does anyone think he did that because of L snatching that beat?

I know it's a stretch but you never know

I can understand BIG being tight but that ire needed to be aimed at Puff. This is this man's livelihood. Pay him. Its not his job to tell you he needs the money. It doesnt matter if he does or doesnt. You pay people for their services.
