Biggie was on top..Jay in 98 couldn't be with Biggie's momentum heading into 98.
Pre Biggie album...Westcoast rap ruled the world in case you missed what Snoop Dogg was in 93.

In '98, multiple MC's in NYC were selling millions of records. Including older artists. People weren't buying those albums because BIG was dead, lol. The music was just good. So if BIG was still alive, people would've just been buying ALL their sh*t. It was never either/or for actual Hip Hop fans back then. People who were around then know that.

West Coast "didn't rule the world", lol. Sales on both coasts were literally at the same level from '91-'96. After '97, NY was outselling every region. Some of the best albums ever were being made during Snoop's run, from Wu, Fugees, Tribe, Nas, Redman, Outkast, and the list goes on and on. NY was far from in need of being "saved". It was in its best run ever during that stretch. More classics were coming out of NY, than any other spot. Every region was selling mad records though. These weird takes gotta chill.

Yeah after Bighoe rescued their relevance in 94 and 95. He was on top...he was making the hits. Nas had a good 96 with the Lauren Hill song, Street Dreams, etc. Alot of that down south Master P garbage was going on too. Mase was way hotter than anything from Jay Z heading into 98.

The minute I saw "Bighoe", your whole sh*t just lost credibility and showed you're another bitter West Coast dude mad about some sh*t that you saw on MTV as a kid 27 years ago, lol.

"Nas had a good song with Lauryn". Nas was selling millions of records. Fugees sold more than Snoop did. So when was NY ever in need of being "saved"? Records coming out of NY during this time were selling like crazy. Even for debut MC's. DMX sold millions on two albums he dropped within months of each other. Big Pun was selling in the millions. On his debut! Redman and other MC's who were on their 4th and 5th album were selling millions. This is all between '96-'98. Jay did 6 million plus in '98. And this is just a few. There were mad other people selling in the millions in NY. According to you NY wasn't relevant when Wu dropped 36 Chambers and when Tribe dropped Midnight Marauders. Literally NYC's Golden Era was when the city was "irrelevant", in your opinion, lol.

And all of this is because B.I.G. died and after he "saved" the city? LOL!!

Gang violence...
For those that were there what was the hype for Biggie’s talent/ music? We all hear about the hype for Nas with BBQ and being anointed the Golden Child/ people waiting on Illmatic . But despite his elite talent never heard about that same level of anticipation with Biggie.
i wouldnt compare big to nas. big was in a situation similar to snoop with a label that became a pop-cultural phenomenon and standardbearer for their region.

nas was coming from very niche hardcore gatekeepers like mc search and large professor. that audience goes searching for the next god MC while the mainstream sits back and has marketing machines tell them what is hot. BIG happened to be that rare guy who was pushed by a great marketer like puff but was actually amazing.

“Got stripes in NY like a Yankee uniform” :wow:

I still listen to Biggie every day. I remember in high school when I got my first car my man Alonzo said you can only listen to BIG for the first month and he only got two albums.

Music and flows are timeless can’t believe they killed the best

You can tell the Lox probably spent days writing their verses while BIG probably thought of his in 30 minutes.

I always say he was the most basic/simple …complex rhyming rapper of all times…

Never really had a gang of crazy metaphors or similes ..didn’t need to bring out a thesaurus for his vocabulary …wasn’t even necessarily a punchline rapper either ..but what he did have was arguably the greatest multi syllable flow ever … the amount of multi’s that he would cram into a bar was next level

That mic presence with that unique voice and storytelling imagery was amazing …And for as much as people shyt on the shiny suit shyt that puffy was on i’m glad he took big and put that polish on him and let him really flourish as the unicorn hit maker slash top tier lyricist…that combo is rare with most rappers

Nikkas talkin' it but ain't livin' it
Cristal pop, I'm sippin' it, mob hats and lizard shyt

Biggie's openings were vivid yet simple. He literally dissed the Lox in his opening then starts talking his shyt.

Im going to say this one last time. The narrative that Jay couldn't be who he was if BIG didn't die is stupid. In 1996 Jayz had a big club record on the Nutty Professor sdtk.

When Aint No N1gga came on everyone used to run to the dance floor. Now I do think Jayz used Biggies formula but it really wasn't BIGs formula. They both got their style from Kane.
The only thing they didn't do that Kane did was the dancing.
