He was a great coach and is still a good coach overall. I think the problem is that he's a bad GM, he's bad at drafting, and he's bad at pro personnel. He's also created a very insular box of control where he is incapable of seeing value in coaches or players that haven't recycled through the Patriots system. On the offense side he doesn't seem to understand that your expectation for a QB can't just be "do your job." This isn't Brady. You need to give your QB help. Which means finding elite skill position guys. Instead of doing that the Pats basically draft some of the wackest receivers and non-noteworthy RBs imaginable. In a relatively deep WR draft, they waited till the 6th round to take Kayshon Boutte. A complete head case weirdo who has played one game this season for the Patriots. It's like they don't give a fukk about speed, skill, nothing.
