  • AI won't take your job, but it will "change it forever," Bill Gates says.
  • Gates says that a 3-day work week is "probably OK."
  • The billionaire has previously acknowledged the risks of AI being misused.

Technology may not replace humans, but it could make a 3-day work week possible — at least, that's what Bill Gates thinks.

The billionaire joined Trevor Noah on his "What Now?" podcast in an episode that premiered on Tuesday. When Noah asked about the threat of artificial intelligence to jobs, Gates said there could one day be a time when humans "don't have to work so hard."

"If you eventually get a society where you only have to work three days a week, that's probably OK," Gates said.

There could exist a world where "machines can make all the food and the stuff," and people don't have to work a five day-plus work week to earn a living wage.

While artificial intelligence could bring about some positive change, Gates has previously acknowledged the risks of AI if it's misused. In July, he published a 3,000-word blog post about the potential impact of AI.

"I don't think AI's impact will be as dramatic as the Industrial Revolution, but it certainly will be as big as the introduction of the PC. Word processing applications didn't do away with office work, but they changed it forever," Gates said at the time. "Employers and employees had to adapt, and they did."

And, Gates isn't the only business titan to predict a shorter work week. JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon said that the next generation of workers will only have a 3.5-day work week due to AI.

"Your children will live to 100 and not have cancer because of technology and they'll probably be working three and a half days a week," Dimon told Bloomberg in October.

Gates once viewed sleep as lazy and told Noah that his life was all about Microsoft from the ages 18 to 40 years old. Now, he feels "the purpose of life is not just to do jobs."

Companies in the US and abroad have been testing the effectiveness of a four-day work week. Some have given positive reports of improved work-life balance and efficiency.

you are a fool if you believe a livable UBI that will replace your income when we get “full AI automation” or whatever people think is going to happen is going to happen.

Republicans gonna just disappear? cost of rent just gonna stop rising?

landlords expect people to make 3x their rent, when the average rent in this country rises to 2k (or more) you think they are going to be giving you a UBI of 6k a month to make up for your job becoming automated :mjlol:

anyone who thinks UBI is going to be a realistic solution in this country is delusional and living in a fantasy where they don't have to work. you're going to lose a chill office job to end up in the service industry for some rich mf if anything.

but i see clowns on here saying "keep fighting to be a wage slave" like it's about that, it's about what's realistically going to happen when jobs disappear. unless you think republicans, who argue against people getting government assistance just to feed their children, are going to suddenly be giving you a livable UBI then you are delusional. 80% of democrat politicians don't even support a UBI, definitely not one that would be livable in the future with the rising cost of living.

shyt republicans want to cut social security for people who have paid into it for decades, you are living a fantasy if you think UBI is realistic in this country or is going to be enough to combat what would happen in a fully automated world.

What will you be 'compensated' for this 3 day work week and what kind of food will these robots be making? Sounds like most people will be impoverished, eating whatever synthetic slop the robots bake up

from the article:

"Critics point out there is nothing synthetic about lab-grown meat, as it is created by growing natural cells without genetic modification."

doesn't matter if you believe UBI is attainable or not, mainstream AI adoption will lead to massive jobs loss in some industries and thats before AGI arrives. the components of the tech to replace customer service representatives exists. market hasn't seen thousands of packaged solutions yet but it's getting fined tuned. consumers are already interacting with A.I on ecommerce and financial services sites via chatbots. level 1 and level 2 tech support is next. its every company acting in their own self-interest to increase profits by reducing labor costs that will lead to job losses.

Most places can get by with a 3 day work week to be honest.

"Most of the work we do is — as the late anthropologist David Graeber said — bullshyt. It doesn’t matter. Its only real purpose is to make billionaires even more money than they can ever spend. It has no deeper purpose or reason whatsoever."

This guy got a great account. Don't know why the posts won't embed though.

He seems to be underselling A.I. a bit here. He said it wouldn't be as impactful as the industrial revolution. If ASI is acheived it would seem like human labor would no longer be needed period. In addition we'd could solve major issues (climate change, poverty, disease etc).
