Nah, they didn't tank. Peyton was just that important to their team.
Football isn't like basketball. There's only 16 games and every player is basically playing for his contract every year.

Very, very true. But it was 4 of those losses where the defensive\offensive play calling was suspect.
The fact they paid Kerry Collins 4 mil to get off the couch and miss training camp raised an eyebrow. They knew good and doggone well that man wasn't going to finish the season...
But you right, everything on that team revolved around Peyton and they were gonna have a losing season regardless of who was starting at QB
