The Super Teams definition has been skewered. And it gets thrown around in the wrong way.


When you create a team of superstars through drafts and player development is not a Super Team. Acquiring key non-superstar players to FILL IN the roster is NOT a Super Team.

When SUPERSTAR free agents decide to join a team like the Avengers and the Super Friends, THAT is what a Super Team is.

80’s Celtics, Lakers, and Pistons were not Super teams.

90’s Bulls and Rockets were not super teams

Kobe/Shaq Lakers were not a super team ( a bunch of good/great EXPERIENCED role players and drafted rookies surrounding Shaq, GREW into a dynasty)

Duncan’s Spurs were not a super team (See Lakers)

Kobe’s almost 3peat Lakers were not a super team.

The Warriors before and after KD, we’re not a super team.

During the 1985 offseason, Bird injured his back shoveling crushed rock to create a driveway at his mother's house. At least partially as a result of this, Bird experienced back problems for the rest of his career.

He was drafted by a world class organization with the history and knowledge on how to build a good team organically. Instead of KD being drafted by the Sonics who spent his entire rookie season playing him as a 6’10 shooting guard.

KD had a shooting guard type of game on a 190lb frame at that time. He actually had the advantage over perimeter players.

The Bullets won the championship in ‘78 the year prior the Celtics drafted Bird. And lost in the finals year Bird was drafted. If he was drafted by the Bullets like you said, then they would’ve probably won the next 5 seasons.


The Celtics were 29-53 the year before they drafted Bird.

1979–80: After Bird joined the team, the Celtics improved to 61–21, the best regular season record in the league. Bird also won Rookie of the Year. With NO key acquisitions at all. Same roster as the prior year.

The next season, they won the chip.

Bird was a team changer without “super team” type of teammates.

Significantly better playmaker. That alone is the difference.

The things KD is better at, the gap is not big enough. KD is an excellent pure shooter, but Bird was the original GOAT shooter. KD is a good defender, but Bird was really solid. Neither were best defender in the league level good.
