Seems like everything AA's do is criticized.

"You eating cherrys? AA's are so ignorant eating cherries"

So much of our culture is copied and taken from people dont even realize it:hhh:

People act like our culture is public domain

Does title of the thread actually match what the writer of the article is saying?

I read the article and it seems like the writer is talking about the entertainer not understanding a religious deity and how the act was sacrilegious. That is no different than when Native Americans state how it is sacrilegious for people to disrespect their deity; or the Muslims or the Whites.

I am an African American and I don't see anything wrong with the writer's point. I just don't see any mention of a greater appropriation of African culture or any of that stuff, because that would be ridiculous considering that African Americans are also Africans. However people do have a tendency of not understanding and respecting other people religions.

The writer did use the words 'appropriation' which I take issue with. West Africans fail to realize that the average African American has blood/genetic/ancestral ties to almost all areas of West Africa. Therefore, we have a claim to it. We can't appropriate something in which we already have a claim. The same can't be said in reverse. African American culture is distinct and was formed on the American continental shelf. It has strains of African, European, and Native influences. Something completely new and separate.

I don't have a problem with Africans appropriating our culture. We are, at a basic level, a communal people. We share, give take, etc. What I take issue with is the denigration that comes after it.

Beyonce may not worship Oshun. But I can guarantee you she had an ancestor that did. Nigerians may not like to hear it, but it is still very much a part of her as it is with them.

:mjlol:Nothing more than a jobless nigerian writing articles looking for notoriety via beyonce.

The same people who will publish an article about a woman giving birth to a goat.
