Honestly I had no idea birding was this big. Dude had endorsement deals, collabs/contracts/relationships with all kinds of companies and organizations. He just filmed a commercial with NISSAN.

So bizarre, the birding community, sexual assault is endemic though, which is what this shows. Christian Cooper is the Central Park guy. And who seemed like a really nice guy lol from his NY Times profile, in all seriousness.

I read the blog post, and it's a little surreal to see such insight into a community that is just not very well known to me, at all. It's also a wrenching and familiar story, one I suspect will (among those who read it) fall across similar fault lines of victim blaming/shaming and condemnation for the abuser's behavior. This case will almost certainly not make it far beyond a NY Times article, if it gets there, but I hope it does.

I will say that I have always disliked nearly the entire way we collectively were taught to think about sex, from both a male and female position. And I am not blaming one or the other, just the real root of this issue, which is tied directly to misogyny, by the same sexual script that pushes men to be the initiators, and teaches us that we should just go for it. To clarify, by that same logic, that the victim, this woman, would even question whether what happened was sexual assault.

I feel no need to read that blog or an article but I just want someone to confirm we are talking "birder" as in "person who watches birds". :dahell:

I also may or may not be saving up a joke about bird watchers being voyeurs by the very definition of their hobby so why would anyone be surprised to find out they are sexual deviants.
