Facts definitely be controversial. Not that the former Dean's comments are nessarily facts. The flag is obviously going to mean different things to different people. And each meaning is true to whoever feels it. It's pretty much called an opinion.

Either way, I'm surprised he was fired; his views on the flag don't strike me as out of the mainstream of black thought.

Nah. As an institution of higher learning you let higher thinking points go.
He wasnt offensive or profane but instead made legitimate points that many feel the same way about. Him basically getting canned for this is an example of what he's talking about. Instead of having a dicussion and using it to open a dialogue which is what is supposed to be happening on a college campus, especially one trying to show their movement towards diversity, they fire a brotha.
This looks bad for the University and doesnt help them shake their stigma that they've been trying to distance themselves from, it's going national and guess who's going to look bad?

Nah. If he was saying some wild disrespectful or offensive but he's an intellectual and made intelligent points on a public forum. The same questions that would/should get asked in any African American themed class is what he asked.
These are the convos you want and need to have at a university in 2019.
